TN -- A 21-year-old, pregnant mother of two fought off her attacker(s), even breaking one of her fingers and she collected the DNA of three different men under her fingernails. On May 25, 2018, a jury convicted a WOMAN, who was unscratched and unmarked, of the young woman's murder. None of the victim's DNA was on the accused, nor was the accused's DNA on the victim, nor were her fingerprints on her bloody cellphone, where there were unidentified fingerprints!
From the newspaper stories, it appears that Vonda Smith was babysitting 3 very young children at the time of the murder.
Here are links to the newspaper articles. Someone in the courtroom told me, there was also DNA of two unidentified men in the victim's underwear. The person who attended the trial told me that many, many holes in the case were not filled in.
From a discussion on Topix: Phone not disclosed at discovery, and the phone pinged off a tower it should not have, but that information was lost -- according to discussion on Topix. Judge John F. Dugger Jr. acknowledged that the State failed in preserving evidence and that there was negligence on the part of the deputies. However, he denied the motion to dismiss the indictment.
Dr. Matrina Schmidt, an assistant professor of forensic pathology, said that no alcohol or drugs were found in the victim's system.
If you look at a map, you will see that after it appears the personal papers of the victim were thrown from a vehicle moving toward the Kingsport Highway, the best road in the area between the towns of Kingsport and Greeneville.
The jury got the case on a Friday of a holiday weekend . . .
