An Austrian-born man police feared may have fallen victim to a hitchhiker killer in the WA outback more than 50 years ago has been found alive and well in Italy.

The Sunday Times can finally reveal the extraordinary story of Otto Hein, who vanished without a trace in 1969.

The old missing persons profile linked above appears to have the info. Apparently he was reported missing by his employer but no one ever located or contacted his family. His brothers knew where he was and they all had no idea Otto was considered a missing person. His brothers said it wasn't unusual for him to go off and not tell people where he was going. Otto had been pulled over in some sort of traffic stop the day he went missing. He said he was afraid because he didn't have a license so he drove until he ran out of gas then hitchhiked from there.
