The Glensheen mansion, a 7.6-acre plot east of downtown Duluth on the Lake Superior shore, was built in 1908 by Chester Congdon with fortunes made from his iron mining business. But the estate’s fame is as the site of one of the most infamous double murders in Minnesota. Congdon’s daughter Elisabeth was found suffocated in her bed on June 27, 1977. Her nurse, Velma Pietila, had been beaten to death with a candlestick


The question came quietly to the docent inside the Glensheen mansion, the way it often does from tourists trying to delicately broach the subject of murder in their midst. "What room was the lady killed in?" a teenage girl asked, almost in a whisper
