(KNSI) — Police and emergency crews are responding to reports of a shooting at Annunciation Church on West 54th Street in Minneapolis.


Sources say that authorities received calls about an armed man dressed in black with a rifle at that location, and this has been declared a mass casualty event. Officials say there are approximately 20 victims so far. Four people are listed in critical condition, and it has been confirmed that two people are dead.


Police are also investigating reports that an explosive device may have been placed inside the church building.

Watching CNN now. It sounds like this church is connected to a school that goes from pre-k to 8th grade, and they were having an all school mass at this time.

Former FBI agent says from what he's seeing by the police response, this event appears to be over (no one rushing in or parking haphazardly).

Shooting suspect dead, no active threat to community​

9:31 a.m.: FOX 9 sources confirm the suspect is dead.

The City of Minneapolis posted the following on social media: "There is an active police situation at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th St. There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained. Stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims – W. 54th Street between Lyndale and Nicollet Ave."

Seven people were shot, one fatally, in a separate mass shooting near a Catholic high school in south Minneapolis yesterday reported Kare11.

Police said the suspect, who escaped in a vehicle and does not appear to have been arrested since, fired around 30 rounds from a high-velocity .223 rifle.

Authorities have not confirmed any connection between the shootings.
