Missing 63-year-old may have been abducted, Sullivan police say

Police said Dale William Ryerson may have been injured during the possible abduction. They're also looking for Cody Lee Hunt as a person of interest.

Sullivan police issued an Endangered Person Advisory for a missing 63-year-old man who may have been abducted.

Dale William Ryerson, 63, was reported missing from the 300 block of Jones Street early Tuesday morning at about midnight. The Sullivan Police Department said they believe he was injured during his possible abduction.

Ryerson is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 185 pounds with gray hair and green eyes.

SECOND UPDATE: On the morning of October 23, 2024, Cody Lee Hunt was taken into custody at a residence in Washington County, MO by the Washington County Sheriff's Department. He was transported to the Washington County Jail before being transferred to the custody of the Sullivan Police Department. The investigation remains ongoing. All individuals involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The situation escalated Tuesday night when Washington County deputies responded to a report of a brush fire around 7:30 p.m. in a wooded area south of Potosi. Upon arrival, they discovered a burned Jeep Cherokee, later identified as Ryerson's vehicle. Tragically, human remains were found inside the vehicle, but authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the remains

Hunt, who was considered armed and dangerous, is now in custody.

Sullivan Police released a report on Tuesday evening that said they had been dispatched to the 300 block of Jones Street in Sullivan. The call was to check the 'well being' of a 63 year old male. It was reported that someone heard a disturbance and saw someone drag the 63 year old man out to his Cherokee (2004) and put the man in the passenger seat and then drove off. The police entered the residence and found what appeared to be the scene of a struggle and potential assault.

At that time, Cody Lee Hunt, 34 years old, was considered a person of interest in their investigation. It was reported that Hunt had an extensive criminal history and was recently released from prison.

As information, this is the same town of Sullivan where an elderly woman named Betty Alexander went missing a few years ago. Someone had stolen some of her prescription patches of pain medication. There was some suspicious activity, but no one has ever been arrested.

This is terrible. No excuse for letting this guy run loose.

ETA: Just checking, Cody Hunt's address in Sullivan in the 300 block of Jones St. Its just a couple of blocks from where Betty Alexander lived when she went missing from her apartment.

One witness told police they observed Hunt “dragging” what appeared to be a lifeless body out of the apartment and into Ryerson’s Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Police were called, and officers found blood in the apartment and signs of a possible violent assault.

Court documents say two days later on October 24, 2024, Irondale Fire Department was dispatched to a wooded area for a brush fire. While they were extinguishing the fire they discovered a Jeep Grand Cherokee had been set on fire. The Washington County Coroner arrived on scene and located human remains in the front seat of the Jeep. The remains were later identified as Ryerson’s.

The victim, Dale Ryerson, 63, was reported missing last October. An Endangered Person Advisory was issued after police found evidence of a struggle and violent assault at Ryerson’s home. A witness told investigators that they’d seen Hunt drag what appeared to be a dead body to Ryerson’s SUV, load it, then drive off.

Hunt was scheduled Monday for a jury trial to begin June 24.
