A man who made scores of obscene phone calls last year to female real estate agents was sentenced this morning in St. Louis County Circuit Court to a year in jail.

Donald Patterson, 61, of Bridgeton, pleaded guilty Tuesday of 34 counts of harassment, all misdemeanors. Prosecutor Kelly Clarkin said the obscene calls were made to 13 victims, primarily to their answering machines.

The defendant returned for sentencing today before Judge Brenda Stith Loftin, who rejected his lawyer's plea for probation and gave the defendant jail time.

Patterson asked Loftin for time to get his affairs in order but Loftin ordered that he be taken in handcuffs to jail immediately

The defendant lost his license to practice optometry in 1996 after he pleaded guilty of six counts of harassment. He admitted in January 1996 that he had called some of his patients anonymously and left obscene messages.
