On Nov. 13, a mother received a phone call and learned that her son was dead, having taken his own life.
Five days later, she buried her son. Hours after that, the mother was dead, too, shot and killed in a parking lot at the Kirksville Days Inn. The suspect, her husband and the suicide victim’s father, was on the run.
About 90 minutes later, Danny Welte, 40, of Kirksville, was arrested outside of the Kirksville Police Department, surrendering himself to authorities.
The string of tragic events has traumatized a local family and shocked the Kirksville community.
Kirksville Police responded to a reported shooting at the Days Inn just before 11 p.m. Thursday. Echo Welte, 41, died from a single gunshot wound from a Hi-Point .380 semi-automatic pistol.
.....
Authorities negotiated for Welte’s surrender in front of the Kirksville Police Department headquarters. He arrived around 12:30 a.m. in a silver vehicle, parking on the opposite side of the street from the department.
In a dramatic scene, Kirksville Police officers and Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers appeared from all sides of the KPD building, flanking the vehicle from various positions.
Welte, who was armed, had agreed to leave his weapon under a seat in the vehicle. He followed officers’ orders as he exited the vehicle with his hands over his head, walked to the middle of McPherson Street and kneeled on the ground. Placing his hands behind his head, he was surrounded and taken into custody without incident.
