On the morning of Nov. 27, someone passing by the Grand Boulevard Lofts apartments near 10th Street and Grand Avenue found Grayson O’Connor’s body on the ground and called police.

According to investigators, the 5-year-old boy fell from the 17th floor of an apartment. A probable cause document indicated Grayson died from “massive trauma to the head,” along with other severe injuries.

His death has been considered “suspicious,” according to information provided by investigators. When officers responded to the scene, they saw an apartment window from the top floor open, the only one on the entire floor
Corrinne O'Connor and her son Grayson.

“It should be noted that [Corrinne O’Connor] did not call emergency response for the incident and the body was discovered by a citizen walking out a basement door of the building,” the probable cause statement read.

The landlord of the Grand Boulevard Lofts apartments filed an eviction petition in court against Grayson’s mother earlier in January. The landlord claimed Grayson’s mother removed a safety device from an apartment window, according to court records. The petition said the landlord found out about the window stop being removed on the same day Grayson was found dead.

According to the probable cause document, Corrinne O’Connor’s apartment was covered in filth and trash. Investigators wrote that an open window of the living room had “a copious amount of chocolate on the sill and exterior ledge of the window. The chocolate on the interior window sill appeared to have been smeared as I observed what appeared to be child hand imprints in the chocolate. the chocolate on the exterior ledge of the window was dripping over the edge down to the ground seventeen stories below.”

Investigators later responded to the apartment unit where Grayson lived and found Corrinne lying in front of the window.

Officers asked Corrinne where her son was, to which she replied he'd "went out the window."

Inside, investigators were met with a filthy scene — feces on the ground in the entryway, food debris and trash piled in a corner, and dried liquid all over the entryway walls.

More feces was found on the floor in the apartment, which appeared to be stamped and flattened into the carpet as if it had been stepped on, per court documents.

Overall, officers noted the unit was dirty and unkempt, with food debris and dirty clothes scattered throughout.
Mother charged in death of 5-year-old Grayson O’Connor, who fell from KCMO apartment building

“That’s the part I feel guilty about because I didn’t do enough. I let my animosity toward her as a woman, as a person, as a parent get in the way of me intervening and taking Grayson under my arms and trying to help more,” Davis admitted.

Another neighbor told KSHB 41 News she filed a report with Missouri’s Department of Social Services roughly two years ago on Grayson’s behalf. The department told KSHB 41 News the earliest it could supply the station with documents we’ve requested to corroborate those claims is April 2024.

Jackson County Prosecutor Baker issued the following statement

I went to this scene to engage at the earliest possible moments of the investigation. The police investigative team have worked diligently on this investigation, ensuring our ability to file charges against the defendant for the harm to this child. While normally charges are announced quickly, all cases are not the same and investigations take multiple steps. In this case, my office filed charges on Dec. 14, 2023. The court issued an order sealing the case until the defendant could be taken into custody. That seal prevented us from even confirming that the case was reviewed and charged by prosecutors though we have continued to engage our resources on this crime.

Corrinne O’Connor faces a criminal charge of endangering the welfare of a child in the first...

Corrinne O’Connor faces a criminal charge of endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree.

On March 1, a grand jury indicted 27-year-old Corrinne O’Connor with one count of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, a felony that is punishable by up to 30 years in prison. She was previously charged by Jackson County Prosecutors.

According to the indictment, she “knowingly acted in a manner that created a substantial risk to the life, body and health” of Grayson by “failing to supervise” him while they “were together in a seventeenth-story apartment containing a fully open window.” This, the indictment states, “resulted in death to the child.”
