MO - Man Convicted Of Killing His Mom Could Walk Free, Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri man who spent nine years behind bars for his mother's murder before his conviction was thrown out could leave prison as early as Monday.

A magistrate has agreed to release 49-year-old Dale Helmig on a $100,000 secured bond.

Prosecutors are appealing a judge's ruling that set aside the conviction. They said they will retry Helmig if they lose.

The body of Norma Helmig was found tied to a concrete block in a river near her home in 1993. Her son was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

The Missouri Court of Appeals today upheld a judge’s order freeing a mid-Missouri man convicted in the 1993 murder of his mother.

Prosecutors in Osage County, Mo., now have 180 days to re-try Dale Helmig. If they do not, his murder conviction and life sentence will be vacated.
