EMPHASIS: Identification Assistance Needed For Remains Found In Vernon County


The Vernon County Sheriffs Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol are requesting assistance in the identification of remains found in Vernon County. Located in 2000, southeast of Nevada, laboratory analysis has determined the remains to be those of a white male. It is estimated the individual was between 26 and 36 years of age at the time of his death, and may have died as early as 1985 and as recently as 1997.

In an effort to identify the remains, a computer-generated image was produced by the Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services (FACES) Laboratory at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. A copy of the image is attached to this news release.

Anyone with information that may lead to identification of the remains is encouraged to call Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman at 417-448-5555 or Corporal Brad Bearden with the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 417-359-1502.

I could not find another thread devoted to this UID. I apologize in advance if there is one already and I missed it.

I looked for this UID in the DOE network and NAMUS. I couldn't find this particular UID in either database. I sent an email to the MSHP inquiring if they could possibly submit the case to both databases.

This is the first thread I've started, I hope I did it right!

Authorities found the remains of a white man between 26 years old and 36 years old who died as early as 1985 and as recently as 1997.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol are asking for the public's help in the identification of human remains found in Vernon County in January of 2000.

A resident walking down a remote lane southeast of Nevada in January of 2000 discovered a skull and body parts, according to Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman. Authorities initially thought that the human remains belonged to Cheryl Ann Kenney who went missing in February of 1991.

It wasn't until earlier this year that that theory was shot down. Laboratory analysis from a forensics lab in Louisiana determined the remains are that of a white male. It is estimated that the man was between 26 and 36 years of age at the time of his death. It is believed the man died sometimes between 1985 and 1997.

I think I found the original news article from 2000. (Note that "Nevada" is a city in Missouri, not the state.)

Recovered at the scene on January 9, 2000 were a skull, hip bone, human hair, bullet (believed to be .38 caliber) and enough decayed clothing fragments that the sheriff was quoted as saying he felt they could match it to clothing descriptions in missing persons' reports.

So it was understandably hard to determine the gender of this UID without resorting to a lab test, and height and weight probably can't be determined at all, but I wish they'd describe the clothing and hair color.

Also, only 30 feet from a private driveway and the UID may have been there as early as 1985? I guess that's possible if it's a fairly long path through a seldom-traveled wooded area...

Steven G. Alyea – The Charley Project

Alyea left home on 1/30/92 at approx. 8:30am with a large amount of cash. He told a neighbor he was going to Lamar Missouri to meet someone around 1:30pm and would be home by 6:30pm. He did not return home and has not been seen since. Alyea's vehicle was found in Fayetteville, Arkansas on 11/1/92. Officials said thevehicle was abandoned for at least 1 month. Prior to his disappearance, Alyea was very close to his family and contacted them regularly. Alyea had a severe heart condition which required daily medication. He left his medication and personal property at his residence.

Taking us 71 south is a direct route to Lamar, MO. He would have passed through Nevada, MO on his way to Lamar, MO.

Kansas City, MO to Nevada, MO : US 71 SOUTH appr. 95 mi

Nevada, MO to Lamar, MO : US SOUTH appr. 28 mi

Fayetteville, AR is about 118 miles south of Lamar, MO

Does anyone else think he might resemble the UID?

On a gut level, yes, I do see a resemblance to Steven Alyea. Maybe one of the anthropometric/Photoshop folks around here can weigh in with an overlay or side-by-side.

Edited to add: Mr. Alyea had an implanted pacemaker. It sounds like only partial remains were found for the UID, but if there were a pacemaker anywhere near the body site I'd hope it would have been found.

I emailed the missing persons division of the Kansas City, Mo police department. I sent them the UID press release information from the Missouri State Highway Patrol including the reconstruction image. I also included the route that Steven might have taken if he indeed was going to Lamar, MO and this is why I thought there was possibility that it could be him.

I'm sure they have already thought of this and possibly 'ruled out' this UID with regards to Steven Alyea, but you never know. I wish there was access to a list of persons/UIDs that have already been 'ruled out' in both cases. I'm still looking for any past news articles that might indicate the clothing that was found with the UID or any other info.

In the Vernon County case, investigators were not able to determine the height of the subject, but Manhein noted that the man may be identifiable based on fillings in the teeth.

At least it is confirmed that estimated height is not available.

I live in the area where the skull was found. Some of the info listed was not accurate. The skull was found in the path of a gate that is opened every morning so it was not there the day before. The LE only did a cursory search of the area and have never been back. In local news reports they said they searched with a backhoe, this is not true. The MHP have issued conflicting statements about the skull. They have stated at different times that this skull is, a young man, a woman, or that DNA was inconclusive. An anthropologist said they could not determine sex, but thought it was a young man or a smallish woman. An overlay of this face on Cheryl Anne Kenney's face, she disappeared about the same time, matches perfectly.

I read the link to the original article and it said they had enough DNA to test. The article also gave a wider age range. I see from this UID's Namus profile the DNA is known and entered. I assume that means that any missing person with a known DNA sample would be ruled out? At the same time, the rule-out list only has 5 names on it.

having said all that, what about this guy Greg Tilley missing from MO in 1992? he is not one of the 5 on the rule-out list. he was 22 in 1992 but age estimates can be wrong.

his car was found in NV in 1993, but that does not by any stretch means that he made it out of MO. there is a good face pic of him in the images section.
