GUILTY MO - Willard Payne, 26, beaten to death, St Louis, 15 June 2009

An ambulance crew discovered the body of a man in Forest Park not far from the St. Louis Zoo. The man was face down and wearing summer shorts and white tennis shoes. He did not have a shirt on. Detectives and evidence technicians worked in the pouring rain to gather evidence. One homicide detective said man had been assaulted. He had scratches on his body but there was no obvious sign of death.

They are awaiting autopsy results. Right now they don't think the person died of natural causes or from health problems. The victim could have been killed somewhere else and then dumped in the park. The scene is on Wells Avenue just west of the zoo.

Police have identified the man, but are waiting to release the name until his family is notified.

Mellonie Jones pleaded guilty to second degree murder, armed criminal action, and filing a false police report in connection to the June 2009 beating death of Willard Bryant Payne of University City.

Jones was ordered to serve 15 years in prison for her role in the crime...

[Dawn] Fulks was tried by a jury in September and was convicted for her part in the attack and lying to police. She was sentenced to a twenty year prison term.
