It was nighttime, and he stepped out of the group home where he worked. Then the people inside heard gunshots.

That's how 30-year-old Demario Hughley, who was married to a Memphis police officer, was fatally shot on the night of Oct. 3 on Greendale Avenue in Frayser.

Hughley worked in a group home for people with intellectual disabilities and was pursuing a master's in child psychology from Strayer University, his wife said last year. She is pregnant with their child.

Investigators have little information about how and why the shooting happened, not even whether the shooter was on foot or drove by, Police Maj. Lambert Ross told reporters at a news conference Friday.

"No witnesses, no video of the incident of anybody going down the street walking, driving. You would think (the attacker) fell from the sky."

Rosetta Hughley says that when she patrolled the streets of Memphis as a police officer, she often had to respond to shootings.

Now one of the city's shootings has forever changed her own life.
Rosetta said the killing has shattered the day-to-day routines she and her husband had together and left her adrift once work hours are done.
"My life just feels foreign, because now it feels like my life is flipped upside down," she said.

The case reflects the severity of the city's gun violence and the physical and psychological damage it causes.

Demario Hughley was pursuing a master's in child psychology from Strayer University, his wife said. He was 30, and his wife is the same age. They had been dating since 2008, but had been married for only a little over a year.

Rosetta Hughley is talking about her husband in the hopes that someone will come forward with tips to solve his killing. Family and friends helped boost the financial reward available to $5,000.

"I just really want to emphasize that if anyone knows anything or if anyone knows who did this to my husband, just call CrimeStoppers ( 528-2274) and the $5,000 reward will be given to them," she said.
"At 12:30, he's at the top of the stairs, calling my name. 'Baby! Baby! I'm home.'"

The night he died, the routine was broken — no phone call telling her he was on his way, no sound of him coming through the door, no shout from the top of the stairs.

"That day just changed me and my son's life completely."

Since the killing, she's no longer doing police street patrols, but rather helps with investigations. "Memphis Police Department, they've been so supportive. Coworkers. The director ... They haven't allowed me to go on the street until I was ready.

"And by the time I was ready, I found out I was pregnant."

Memphis Police seek help to find who killed a pregnant officer’s husband
They say there’s no reason to think Hughley was targeted.

He was an upstanding citizen and was working on his master’s degree in psychology in hopes his wife wouldn’t have to work so hard so they could take care of their family and take trips.

That’s what they wanted. It’s the dreams they all have for their kids that their life is better than our lives were.

His wife is now seven months pregnant. Her police department co-workers say she is not out on patrol but instead working in the office.

Police say the only way they’ll solve the case is from a tip.

You can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 528-CASH if you have anything that can help police.

This is a sad unfortunate situation...

I wonder if they checked surveillance cameras at area businesses and homes...Were any cars pulled over in that area?....They could check phone towers in the area around the time of the shooting...

"$5,000 offered for tips leading to the arrest of those involved in a shooting outside outside a Frayser group home in October. DeMario Hughley, who lived and worked at the home, had stepped outside one night to smoke a cigarette when he was approached by one or more individuals who shot him to death. Hughley’s wife, Memphis Police Officer Rosetta Hughley, is due to have a child her husband will never know."

The Frayser area seems like it's plagued with gang violence, shootings and robberies...I hope the MPS checks the ballistics to other murder and shooting victims in the area to this victim...

I found a few articles about robberies near St Elmo Ave....This area could be called Rangeline??...A few people were able to give descriptions of suspect's vehicles...This area is less than 10 minutes away from this crime...

2 shot during Frayser home invasion robbery

Is it a case of mistaken identity... Perhaps he was followed and confronted when he went outside to smoke...I wonder if his vehicle is similar to another vehicle in the community...

Memphis police beef up patrols after three interstate shootings - The Daily Memphian

It could have been a crime of opportunity....They were going to rob him but something went wrong or they got spooked...Hopefully LE can convince a suspect in another case to cooperate on this one....Sometimes the community knows or heard rumors but they may be to afraid for their safety to speak up...It seems like neighbors would have heard the shooting and looked out their windows...
