Details of Disappearance
Ales was last seen walking near her home Batesville, Mississippi at 11:00 a.m. on January 14, 1991. Police went to her house on Kyle Road on January 19, after her postal carrier notified them that her mailbox had filled up.

There were no indications of a disturbance at the home and nothing was missing, but Ales has never been heard from again. She left a coffee cup and a container of butter on the table, and food on the stove. Authorities stated it looked like she had eaten breakfast and was starting to prepare lunch when she left the house for some reason.

Ales didn't own a vehicle, and she had no health problems or mental issues that could explain her disappearance. Her case remains unsolved.

Mystery Mail Raises New Questions About Ales (From 2005. Scroll down a bit to see the article in the second column.)

An anonymous letter sent to Police Chief Roger Vanlandingham last week was an ominous reminder that the case remains unsolved since the day in January, 1991 when Claire Ales disappeared from her home on quiet Kyle Street.

The police report stated that it looked like she was preparing lunch with dishes on the table and the butter out.....but isn't 11am a bit early for lunch?

It also states it looked like she'd already eaten breakfast and was preparing lunch.....but for a small woman of 78 years old, she seemed to have a big appetite with lots of dishes out etc.

Was she expecting guests?

It's almost like she was having visitors for lunch, and nipped out to the grocery store as she forgot an ingredient.
But no visitors ever reported her missing when they arrived.

Unless the expected visitors were the nefarious ones?

I wonder if there may be family involvement here, regarding a will or the house etc.

There is no mention of a husband or children.

It was reported that Clare left her house on Kyle Rd on foot. Human remains have been found by a dog near Barnacre Rd. This is about 12.5 miles from her home. Authorities are working to identify the remains. There are several people missing from Panola County but Clare could be a possibility.
