Tragic twist in death of 5-year-old boy whose parents blamed black mold

The stepfather and mother of a 5-year-old Mississippi boy are being charged in the child's death, with the stepfather facing capital murder charges in the case.

A Mississippi mother and stepfather were arrested in the death of their 5-year-old child who died after an incident they initially blamed on black mold.

Denzel Jamal Blakely, 29, and Lachelle Renae Washington, 31, were both charged in the death of Edward Lamptey.

Blakely, the child's stepfather, was charged with capital murder, while Washington was charged with child deprivation of necessities resulting in substantial harm, according to a report from the Sun Herald Tuesday.

The autopsy found that the child suffered from blunt force trauma. To my knowledge, that is not a result of black mold.

An autopsy would ultimately reveal the child died from blunt force trauma and the death was ruled a homicide. Gulfport detectives interviewed the mother, 31-year-old Lachelle Renae Washington, and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Denzel Jamal Blakely, and both admitted culpability in the child’s death, according to police.

my prediction on this one: they will both plead not guilty, mom will eventually try the battered woman defense. I hope they both rot.

According to newly released court documents, 5-year-old Edward King Lamptey Jr. suffered multiple injuries before his death, including internal bleeding, a fractured rib and lacerations to his liver, right adrenal gland and left kidney.

According to court documents, Blakely said Lamptey had complained of stomach pain on April 13, but told the child he would take him to the hospital when he could arrange transportation. The next morning when Washinton when to get her kids ready for school, she found Lamptey unresponsive and cold to the touch. He was later pronounced dead at Gulfport Memorial Hospital.

Look at that sweet face!
I will never understand how someone could look at that adorable 5 year old and think "let's blunt force trauma him" and say he died from exposure to black mold. People can be terribly cruel....and terribly stupid.

He was sentenced to 35 years.

It seems as Denzel Blakely will have to serve 40 years. From article in post #6.

Blakely is sentenced to 35 years for second-degree murder and 20 years for felony child abuse. The two sentences will run consecutively for a total of 55 years, 15 years suspended, leaving 40 years to serve in the custody of Mississippi Department of Corrections.
