A burned vehicle believed to belong to a missing Hinds County woman was discovered Wednesday, with the woman still not located.
Ebony Owens, 36

According to a tweet from Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, Ebony Owens, 36, of Edwards, Mississippi, was reported missing the same day by her family.

During the investigation, what is believed to be Owens’ 2015 White Acura TXL was found burned in the area of Old Highway 80 and Jones Road in Hinds County.

In a later tweet, Sheriff Jones said the license plate was recovered in a nearby area and that the search for Owens is currently ongoing.

Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Owens is urged to call the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office at 601-352-1521.

Jones said the Acura was found at about 6 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Old Highway 80/Jones Road in Edwards. The sheriff said the license plate was found in an area nearby.

Jones is scheduled to hold a news conference Thursday morning about the case. He said Owens is still missing, but progress has been made in the investigation.

There was a large police presence overnight at the Ridgeland Ranch Apartments. Ridgeland police and Hinds County deputies were at the scene. Officials with the Ridgeland Police Department said they were assisting the Hinds County Sheriff's Department with a missing persons case. It was not known if the operation was connected to the search for Owens.

In a press conference Thursday, Sheriff Tyree Jones said the search for Owens began Wednesday when she did not appear for work. Her family has also not had contact with her since Tuesday.

Electronic evidence shows her being in the Clinton area late Tuesday evening, according to the sheriff.

The license plate of her burned vehicle was found in the woods near where the Acura was found. Authorities say they believe the vehicle was set on fire purposefully.

On Wednesday, Hinds County deputies and Ridgeland police went to the Ridgeland Ranch Apartments on County Line Road where a vehicle was towed and evidence believed to be linked to Owens’ disappearance was recovered from an apartment.

“At this particular time, we are seeking the location of her husband,” Jones said in the press conference. “He’s identified as Michael Owens. He is not a suspect at this time, but he is being sought for questioning in this investigation...”

The search for evidence took Hinds County deputies and Ridgeland police to Ridgeland Ranch Apartments Wednesday night. Jones said a vehicle was towed from the apartment complex, and evidence linked to her disappearance was discovered there.

"Based on the circumstances, we believe that she could be in danger and she could be possibly seriously harmed, as well," Jones said.

Evidence was also recovered with the help of Warren County sheriff's deputies during a search Wednesday night in an area near Flowers, west of Edwards, Jones said.

"We will continue to search Wester Hinds County near the Warren County line with assistance with our partners, hopefully, to find Ms. Owens," Jones said.

The sheriff said investigators have been in contact with Ebony Owens' family, and they are "abreast of the situation."

On Thursday, Jones said Michael Owens spoke with them and has since been charged with his wife’s death along with arson, as they believe the vehicle was purposely set on fire.

According to authorities, they have been informed that Ebony Owens died from at least one gunshot wound and their efforts have turned into a search and recovery operation in the Big Black River near Old Highway 80.

For nearly six hours on Friday, multiple law enforcement agencies searched the Big Black River trying to find the body of Ebony Owens.

“We didn’t come up with any positive results today,” said Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones. “We are shutting down for today, but of course, the search will go back into effect tomorrow.”

“A lot of debris in the water as well as the water conditions, those are some of the challenges right now,” the sheriff explained.

“We don’t have a motive right now, but it is safe to say that he did do it. We do know the matter of death that the lady died, and we do feel positive that he put her in the river as well,” said Sheriff Jones.

Owens is charged with murder and arson, and Jones said more charges could also be on the way.

“Right now, we’re just still remaining optimistic about the recovery of this young lady to make sure that we can return her to her family for a proper burial,” said Jones.
