Missing person advisory issued for Polson man

A Missing Endangered Person Advisory (MEPA) has been issued by the Montana Deparmtent of Justice for Ben J. Griffing.

The MEPA was issued on behalf of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Griffing, 62 years old, is about 6’6” tall and weights 165 pounds. He has blue eyes with brown and gray hair. Griffing drives a 1999 white Toyota Avalon with Montana personalized license plate "Giraffe."

He was last seen on January18 in Polson leaving for a skiing and winter camping trip to the Pioneer Mountains near Dillon.

Griffing was last seen on Jan. 18 in Polson leaving for a skiing and winter camping trip to the Pioneer Mountains near Dillon.

The MEPA states that Griffing also frequently camps and skis the Bitterroot Selway Mountains near Darby.

He was reported missing on Wednesday and there is concern for his welfare, according to the advisory.

Doesn’t 6’6” and 165 lbs seem incongruent? My ex was 6’2” and 165 and he was a thin man. Praying BG is found safe. I always cringe when I see “winter camping”, etc., especially alone.

Incongruent is a big word for this late at night.. ... I have vague recollections of that from 9th grade geometry. But yes, that sounds skinny. His vanity license plate says "Giraffe" so I assume his height and/or posture would make him stand out in a crowd (literally). Hopefully that helps him to be found.

Yes that’s what my first thought was is wow that’s a tall man, he’d be easy to spot! Then the weight threw me off. But if he’s off winter camping in the wilderness I guess his height isn’t going to play into him being found. I just hate cases like these!

His height definitely stood out to me from the beginning. Then I saw that his license plate reads giraffe...

He was last seen Jan 18.
He wasn’t reported missing until Feb 3.

Questions that come up:
1. Why was he not reported missing until Feb 3? 2. Was this when he was expected to return from his trip?
3. Who last saw him on Jan 18 leaving for the Pioneer Mountains near Dillon?
4. Who reported him missing?

Montana is kind of hands off the missing adults, it is a very long time if they are injured or have been harmed
Local papers maybe I am guessing he lives in Polson. Just one paper up there I think. Praying for you Ben

Missing man was headed to Pioneer Mountains

Although he is a resident of Polson, Griffing was last seen there Jan. 18 leaving for a skiing and winter camping trip to the Pioneer Mountains near Dillon. Although the MEPA for Griffing has expired, he has not been located.

• Ben's body was discovered in a remote area east of Missoula on April 12.
• His vehicle was found at the Garnet Ghost Town parking area off Montana Highway 200 on April 1.
• LE searched for him on April 1 but found no sign of him.
• Nine days later, shed hunters located Ben's backpack two miles from the parking area, LE returned, and Missoula Co. SAR discovered Ben's body on April 12.
• Foul play is not suspected although the investigation is ongoing.
