Butte-Silver Bow County police and 15-90 Search and Rescue are searching for a 30-year-old woman who was reported missing early Saturday in the area of the Highlands Campground just south of Butte in the Highland Mountains.

The woman is identified as Deidra Lufkins, a Native American woman who is 5’9” and weighs 150 lbs. She is from South Dakota.

Lufkins was separated from two men she was with on either Thursday or Friday evening. When last seen, she was on foot and not dressed for the recent weather conditions in the area.

15-90 Search and Rescue has conducted an extensive ground search of the area where Lufkins was last seen but have been unable to find her.

Anyone who was in this area who may have seen Lufkins is asked to call the Butte police at 406-497-1120.
A ground-search continues Sunday with a specialized drone being used as well.

I fear for her in the weather that's forecast as it will be colder than that at higher elevations where she was last seen. Snow and rain and ambient temps in the 20's down in Butte. Without proper clothing or shelter that is not survivable for more than a few hours. Hopefully, she was raised in/near the mountains and knows how to protect herself from the elements if she is lost. My heart sank a bit reading she's a Native American woman hiking with 2 men. So many native American women go missing.
How did they become separated?!

This whole thing stinks. IMO Don't even know if she disappeared on Thurs or Friday?

Exactly, that's what pinged my hinky meter, surely the 2 men she was with would know if it was Thursday or Friday she went missing?

And HOW did she become separated from them?

Also, if they weren't dressed for hiking there, why were they doing it?

Last question...who were the 2 men she was with? Family? Friends?

This brings back memories of Cassie Shelton Sheetz -- the same circumstances -- hiking with two men; became separated at night. I hope the outcome is different and that she will be found safe.

There is a little more information on the circumstances in the linked article:

“The woman, who is from North Dakota, was with two other men in the Highlands when their car got stuck Thursday.”

“The trio walked around seeking help when the woman got separated from the group.”

So, looks like they were not actually hiking? I still wonder about the circumstances, though, was it Thurs or Fri? Which way did Deidra go to look for help?

I am wondering if she was taken out there against her will and was able to escape and run away? I just cant understand why a person would get separated from a group when they are in the woods. Never sits well with me. IMO

I knew, just KNEW, this would have a bad ending!!

It had all the classic hallmarks.....

*Rural area
*Missing person
*Not dressed for weather
*Native American woman
*2 men, 1 woman of unknown relation
*Story makes no sense
*Lacking in detail

Usually you only need TWO on that list above for a bad ending. This had all of them.

RIP sweet lady.

There is definitely MORE to this story than what we are getting and I hope that LE has the same feeling. I would hate for this woman's death to go unchecked bc she died of hypothermia. None of the information makes sense.
