Jim Mann, 65, disappeared without a trace about Aug. 1. Mann’s family thought he was travelling to meet one of two friends for a road trip. After they didn’t hear anything from him for a couple of weeks, they reached out to those people and learned the trips had not occurred. Police learned about Mann being missing after his landlord called to report that he hadn’t paid the rent.

Mann’s niece said she had played voice tag with her uncle in the middle of July as they tried to make sure they would connect when she returned to the Bitterroot in early August for a visit, but those contacts stopped around the first of August.

He should have his elderly black Labrador retriever with him.

A Facebook page called Missing Person Jim Mann has been created for people to share any information.

Mann drives a white 1994 Chevy Blazer with a black hood and black tailgate.

Snip:
Mann is an outdoorsman who likes hiking and hunting in spots such as Lake Como and Painted Rocks State Park.
His family says they are afraid that something might have happened to him while he was exploring Montana’s wilderness. "He camps, he goes out all the time hiking. His Facebook page is just filled with pictures," said Mann's niece, Angela. "He goes out hiking a lot and I guess what our biggest fear is he's out hiking and something medically happened to him or he fell down a ravine and hurt his leg, or something like that , you know, that he's just stranded out somewhere."

Search narrows for missing Darby man, two people missing in Idaho

Darby Town Marshall Larry Rose said they recently were told of a sighting of Mann’s 1994 Chevy Blazer with a black hood and black tailgate headed southbound from the reservoir on Aug. 4.

The witness said he had checked through some receipts and other records to verify the date that he saw the distinctly marked vehicle.

“He said he was 100 percent sure,” Rose said.

While it narrows the area where Mann might be, Rose said it’s still a large region.

“There are a tremendous amount of roads in that area,” Rose said. “You couldn’t cover it in a day or maybe even a week.”

With the general rifle big game season opening this week, Rose is hopeful that a hunter might spot Mann’s vehicle while driving around the backcountry.

“I also know you could drive right by it and if it’s off the road in some brush, you wouldn’t see it,” Rose said.
