I agree on the occult ritual. Seems some ranchers could get together and install cameras around where their herds are. I mean, would something like that be possible?
I do realize it would be challenging, expensive, a logistical nightmare even, but still…. Jmo

I guess the tricky part would be to anticipate where to place the cameras. It's the first thing I thought too but it's probably too expensive to do it the way you'd need to, to cover all the land your cattle graze on.

Yep, you’re right. A logistical nightmare. Particularly due to it being so random, where would anyone know where to start.

Not sure exactly why I’m thinking of Vampires now.
