Not even for Elon Musk's money would I go to Mexico.
In 2018, about 4.5 million American tourists visited Mexico and 67 were the victims of a homicide. You have a roughly .0000146% chance of dying by homicide if you travel to Mexico. It's a beautiful county, rich in culture, and I've driven all over its northwest, traveled Quintana Roo extensively (including this Feb!) and can't wait to see more. Mexico has cartels and a terrible femicide problem and many Mexicans do suffer. However, this violence so rarely extends to American tourists. By comparison, 1 in 107 Americans die in a car accident, so I'm going to see our whole beautiful world at much less risk than driving to my grocery store!

Anyway, I wonder if family members went to the organization first because they feared police would be corrupt or unhelpful?

I wish I could like this more! I love traveling through Mexico and think it’s weird when people malign a whole country.
