Police in Mexico have arrested a man suspected of "at least seven cases of women’s killings," according to assistant public safety secretary Richard Mejía. The suspect, who used the aliases 'Juan Carlos Gasperín' and 'Greek Román Villalobos,' is suspected of luring young women with fake job postings on Facebook. He previously had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with a rape he committed in 2012.
31-year-old Viridiana Moreno is believed to be the latest victim of the suspected serial killer. She went missing on May 18 after she left her house to head to a job interview at the "Hotel Bienvenido" in Cardel, Veracruz, and failed to return home. Initially, the Governor released a statement in which he said Viridiana was being "protected" and was not "missing," which relieved her family. When they failed to hear anything else from government officials about Viridiana's whereabouts, however, they decided to launch their own search for her.
Three days after her disappearance, family and friends gathered to search the areas where her phone last pinged. They found several human remains in plastic bags scattered around outside the coastal town of Chachalacas, but the family was unable to confirm they were Viridiana's and DNA testing had to be conducted. The remains were confirmed to be Viridiana's.
An investigation revealed that several other young woman had been lured to the same hotel under the false pretense of a job interview. One young woman said that she received a call from a young man who said "told [her] that [he] was human resources personnel who was in charge of hiring for the hotel."
When authorities searched a home rented by the suspect, they found part of Viridiana's clothing as well as the clothing the suspect was captured on surveillance video wearing the day of her murder, in addition to a scooter and other evidence.
The suspect was also arrested in connection with the murder of Evelyn Afiune, 22, who went missing in March of this year. She was graduating from university this year and was searching for her first job, and was also lured with a fake job interview. She was seen on security camera footage entering a barbershop in Cuautla alongside an unidentified man, but there was no footage of her leaving the store. The man, however, was seen leaving the store carrying multiple bags. Her body was found two days later in a canal in the town of Santa Inés.
The suspect was arrested, "leaving behind a trail of criminal acts in Veracruz, Puebla, Morelos and Querétaro, for which there is already an arrest warrant in Morelos for femicide," said a government official. Authorities believe he has killed at least 7 women and the investigation is ongoing.
