I’m wondering if the victim caught him in her house without permission prior to the murder. Did she tell him off? Was angry? Didn’t like that he was overstepping their neighborly relationship? Did she threaten to expose him to others on the street?

I get the sense that Ahle liked that people saw him as the “mayor”. He wanted to be a hero. Needed to be seen in that vein. What better way to get rid of a problem and be seen as a hero.?

It's like it could be an episode of Fear thy neighbor.

He's retired LE

Was he considered Mayor of the block because he was still on the beat, just his own street?

I think the burglary charges are going to be key here.
I thought the same regarding Fear Thy Neighbor. Several episodes have a “mayor” type person involved.

I have walked or jogged past these two houses, conservatively speaking, 500 times since 2020.
Her house was memorable - she had a montage of front yard decor featuring plastic deer, flowers, rocks and other cute critters. It was unusual for NJ, and as soon as news of this came to light, I’m guessing at least a quarter of the town’s 8,000 or so residents instantly knew where this was.
Story is intensely shocking.
MOO: Dateline episode to come one day, no question.

Great point and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck !

About the only people I let in my house besides family was a few very good friends who'd had me over to their homes -- when we traded some babysitting duties for each other ?
I'm talking like about four families total.

No matter how helpful, I wouldn't want a friendly guy inside my home, even if a leaky pipe needed looking at or whatever.
Just being cautious.
This is just such a wild twist.
Sorry for Virginia's family, it sounds like they initially believed him ?
What a sad betrayal.
Omo.

then who fixes your leaky pipes or whatever?

Yes, good point !
I should have clarified.
We have employed a local service that my neighbors have used and trust.
This ... after my DH tried to fix a leaky faucet in the kitchen island countertop, smaller sink.
Except without plumbing knowledge, it's better not to attempt repairs yourself ?
The less said about that incident, the better.
Imo.

Agreed, esp. the bolded.

Also wondering if the perp had some type of 'hero complex' ?
I.e., "I'm the master of all I survey, and no one challenges me...".
Those types of people can be scary and in this case I think he hid an evil side of himself !
Imo.

A person believed to be Ahle is seen going from his own garage, with an item in-hand, to the victim’s garage, opening the door halfway just before midnight, and ducking inside.

He emerges and goes back to his own garage, before reentering the victim’s garage, and then is not seen coming out for about an hour and a half.

Around 1:28 a.m., a very bright flash is seen from the victim’s bedroom window on-camera - emanating through the house, after which smoke is seen billowing from the victims house.
