OLIET A woman slipped into a deserted Silver Cross Field last week, cavorted naked about the stadium and took a pickax to a cash machine. Stadium surveillance cameras captured the woman's early morning antics but the ballpark-breaker remains at large.
The surveillance tapes show an "unclothed" black woman inside the stadium about 4 a.m. Sunday, police said. The woman "appeared strange and confused as she stacked folding tables, chairs and traffic cones," according to a police report.
"At one point, she can be seen banging a chair against the gate and shaking the gate" as cars drove past, the report said.
It was unclear how the woman gained entry to the ballpark in the early morning hours of the first weekend of the Joliet JackHammers' off-season. Detectives reportedly were investigating the possibility that once inside the woman was having trouble finding her way back out.
While the intruder was spending time in the JackHammers' friendly confines, she found a pickax and slammed it repeatedly into a stadium cash machine.
The woman failed to gain entry to the cash machine but did manage to inflict about $2,000 worth of damage to the ATM, police said. The woman, described by police as in her 30s, about 5-foot-5 and 100 pounds with short black hair, apparently obtained the pickax from the ground crew's tools, police said.
While police said the woman was unclothed during her wanderings around the ballpark, she seems to have happened upon a T-shirt and sock at some point in her ramble. The surveillance tapes show her wearing the T-shirt and single sock when she made her exit through the team's souvenir shop, police said.
