Nazi hunters Zvi Aharoni and Yaakov Meidad, aged 91 and 93, die a month apart

This is a terrific obit--essay, detailing the hunt and capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, as well as the finding of Herbert Cukurs, the notorious “Hangman of Riga.” Anyone with even a passing interest in the post-World War II tracking of Nazis, or who enjoys a good spy tale, or who likes to see justice done, will profit from reading this account from Daily Telegraph.

Meidad’s biggest difficulty was finding two big, reliable cars for the team to use in the operation, into one of which Eichmann was to be bundled as he returned home from work. Eventually, and expensively, he prevailed, and on the night of the kidnap, May 11, Aharoni was behind the wheel of one as the team’s two strongmen positioned themselves under its bonnet, pretending to examine its faulty engine. When Eichmann passed they seized him, but inexpertly. According to Aharoni, the swift snatch descended into farce and Eichmann and his captors rolled around on the ground, as Eichmann “howled and screamed”: “The whole thing seemed to last forever.”
