A 37-year-old woman has been reported missing from Union County, the sheriff’s office posted Monday on Facebook.

Family members reported Alison Thia Thomas missing on Feb. 13 after she was last seen at a house in the area of Flint Ridge Road, near Highway 742 in Marshville. Her family told Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura they believe she may be in danger.

Walter Thomas said that day was the last time they heard from his sister.

“She would do anything she could to keep that cell phone on, that cell phone is missing,” he said.

The area where Alison Thomas was last seen is rough terrain, with fields and forests that stretch on for miles.

“There’s not a lot around. I mean you’ll see a lot of acreage, a lot of trees, chicken, houses -- things like that,” Union County Chief Deputy Tony Underwood said.

He said state investigators are part of the search.

*I guess her middle name is being reported spelled two different ways. A relative posted in Facebook comments that the correct spelling is “Thia”

A private search party will set out Thursday morning to try and find a missing Union County woman.
The Union County Sheriff's Office said 37-year-old Alison Thai Thomas was last seen back on Feb. 13. The search party is set to meet at 9 a.m. in the Food Lion parking lot in Oakboro, North Carolina. Deputies said she was last seen on Flint Ridge Road.

Detectives in Union County are now offering a $5,000 reward for information in this case. Officials said since her disappearance there have been extensive search efforts, which involve numerous UCSO detectives, K-9 officers as well as drones. They said the SBI is also assisting in these efforts.

Thomas’ family, concerned that the mother of two was abducted, handed out missing person’s flyers Thursday with a picture of her smiling face.

The fliers covered windshields at a shopping center in Oakboro.

“You don’t really hear about things like that around here that often,” one concerned shopper told Channel 9.

All day long, a search party of family and friends combed through thick brush in a wooded area between Oakboro and Marshville near where Thomas was last seen.

Investigators with the Union County Sheriff’s Office say Thomas was living at a home on Flint Ridge Road and was last seen the day before Valentine’s Day.

Family shared their fears for Thomas’ safety and suspicions of foul play. The woman is without her car, purse and glasses raising the alarm.

“We know that something is awry, that something has gone on, and we do not believe in any way, shape, or form that she walked away from anything,” Sunshine Thomas, Alison’s sister, told Channel 9 earlier this week.

I'll just note that the preceding article is titled "death ruled a homicide" but, as the OP noted, the content of the article states that the death is being "investigated as a homicide." Very different things, IMO.

Despite no arrests at this point, investigators said they have some leads in the case.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office has been pooling resources with their counterparts in Jackson County in hopes of turning those leads into arrests.

“We’re making progress, but we’re still now ready to move ahead with an arrest,” Tony Underwood of the UCSO said.

While they wait for what has been an emotionally taxing case to come to a close, family members are working to plan a celebration of life for Thomas next week in Winston-Salem.

A reward of up to $5,000 remains available for anyone with information that leads to an arrest.

While the motive is unclear, investigators have learned more about what may have happened the night Thomas disappeared.

"We believe she lived at the home on Flint Ridge Road, temporarily. That's where she was living... It appears that she may have been inside cooking a meal when all of this happened," Lt. Maye said. "She did know a few of the people that we've arrested…. I don't think she knew what their intentions were, obviously, or she would not have let them into the home.”

“These individuals are truly violent," Lt. Maye said, "and their actions, you know, took a mother from her children, it took a daughter from a father, it took a sister from a brother. And, you know, we want to make sure these people stay behind bars.”
