Raleigh, N.C. — The owners of a Raleigh home that was raided by FBI agents on Wednesday night were taken into custody and charged Thursday.

During a federal court appearance Thursday afternoon, Leonid Teyf was charged with money laundering, conspiracy in a series of money laundering, aiding and abetting in money laundering, bribery of a public official, murder for hire and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Mansion raid reveals murder-for-hire plot

"According to the complaint filed Thursday, the Teyfs hired a housekeeper from Russia, and the housekeeper, her husband and their son all lived in the Teyfs' multimillion-dollar north Raleigh mansion.

In February 2018, Leonid Teyf told a confidential source that he believed his wife had been involved in a romantic relationship with the housekeeper's son. Teyf told the informant that he wanted to pay someone to get the son to talk and then have the son overdose on drugs.

Teyf then said he wanted the son deported because, if he was back in Russia, "he would be buried already."

Allegedly living in N.C. mansion off kickbacks from money-laundering scheme, Russian man accused in plotting murder of ex-housekeeper’s son

"Teyf and his wife had luxury cars, expensive artwork and a 17,000-square foot house tended by housekeepers along a Raleigh golf course, court documents show. Wake County property records list its value as nearly $5 million. Deeds indicate the couple has owned it since 2012.

The house was raided by federal agents on Dec. 5, drawing attention from local media outlets.

Federal prosecutors now are trying to seize assets including the mansion, four Mercedes-Benz sedans and artwork worth $2.6 million"

A wealthy Russian man who has been the focus of media attention since the FBI raided his mansion earlier this month used a downtown Raleigh condominium as a “safe house” for guns, ammunition and cash, according to federal court testimony.

Investigators found guns and “hundreds of rounds of ammunition” at the condo, Kinney testified. They also found a safe in the master bedroom that at one time contained thousands of dollars used to carry out the murder-for-hire scheme.

“Glenwood was literally a safe house, solely to keep a safe of guns and cash,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Barbara Kocher.
