Burke County deputies charge man with murdering 2-month-old baby

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Deputies said they've charged a man in the death of a 2-month-old child in Burke County.

ABC affiliate WSOC reports Maurice Dashawn Springs, 23, is charged with murder without regard for human life.

Officials said deputies were called to Carolina Health Care System -- Blue Ridge on Sept. 4 after an unresponsive 2-month-old boy was taken to the hospital by his parents.

The baby was transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, but he died on Sept. 9.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office said a second-degree murder warrant was served Friday on 23-year-old Maurice DaShawn Springs of Morganton. He was in the Burke-Catawba jail without bond awaiting a Monday court date.

The sheriff's office says deputies responded Sept. 4 to a report of an unresponsive male infant brought to a Morganton emergency room by his parents. The child died five days later in a Charlotte hospital.

The News Herald of Morganton reports search warrants filed in the case indicate the infant had a traumatic brain injury from shaken baby syndrome.

Brought to the magistrate on Friday, Springs shook his head no when reporters asked him whether he had committed the crime.

Another beautiful child gone. I guess he was crying too much, like so many others. Why didn't he just gently rock that baby boy instead of shaking the precious life out of him?
Just dammit.

ps - NC is a DP state.

MORGANTON, N.C. (WBTV) - Maurice Deshawn Springs stood before a judge in Morganton Monday, answering routine questions but saying nothing else. Springs is accused of killing his 2-month-old son while he was babysitting two weeks ago.

Court papers say the mom had gone out for errands and when she returned the baby was unresponsive.

Doctors at the local emergency room alerted law enforcement after they examined the child. The baby was transferred to a hospital in Charlotte where he died several days later.

Doctors, according to court paperwork, determined that the child died as a result of “Shaking Baby Syndrome” where brain injuries result.
