What if teen is not in THIS sheriff office’s custody, but IS in custody in a different jurisdiction for a different crime? Seems like that would make sense why they’ve announced that they’ve charged the suspect and filed a summons for the suspect, but don’t have the suspect in custody (THEIR custody), but also don’t seem to be looking for the suspect or getting public help in looking for the suspect. You have to look at the exact statements from LE vs what the media has inferred that to mean. From what I could find, the Orange County sheriff only said that they didn’t have the perp in custody, but I don’t see where police said the suspect is at large or they are looking for them. That was added by media, because they assume if OC doesn’t have the perp, the perp is on the loose. But if a different agency has the perp held for a different crime, that may make sense all the way around. Why would LE announce that they had filed a petition for the arrest of a 17-year-old, if they were not ready to arrest him? Why not just silently continue to do surveillance on subject until they are ready, and then make an announcement only when the suspect was in custody?
I don’t know how that stuff gets sorted in LE - does the one agency get to go through motions of pressing their charges and just make perp available for appearances in the other jurisdiction when necessary? So would a perp be going through the process simultaneously for different crimes in different jurisdictions?
There was a very similar crime in August where two 16 yr olds were shot and hid in a wooded area within a neighborhood not that far from this crime. Only days after Lyric and Devin were found, police arrested a 14 year old and 17 YEAR OLD for that crime. Shortly after that, OC announced they were pressing charges against a 17 year old. Maybe 17 yr old got picked up by Alamance county for the August murders and there was evidence or a confession in the lyric/devin murders as well?
