Wow, that artist rendering is almost too good. I thought it was a picture! Ironically really realistic recons aren't always a good thing, if there are some details that are off, a relative might say 'oh there's a picture of this guy but the nose is off, it can't be Gary' etc. CCTV wasn't as common in 2002 but I wonder if there was any.

I wonder about that sometimes also! Like it is close but not close enough for the recognition to spark.

Another thing is they could ask the clerk how spot on the composite is to him. This poor guy had such a bad day:( he gets into an argument with a clerk then gets hit by a truck. Poor guy!

It was in an article that I’m trying to find. It’s alongside a whole set of articles for Does in NC.

I found the article mentioned further above: The Butner-Creedmoor News

According to the article:

On August 3, 2002, at 2:40 PM, during an argument with clerks at a convenience store on Fayetteville’s Grove Street, he stepped onto a busy street and walked into the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler while trying to cross. He was upset because some items he had hidden were missing. He died an hour later in the hospital from a skull fracture and blunt-force trauma.

Per the postmortem toxicology report, he had no alcohol in his system. The article repeatedly refers to him as a transient.

He was 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed 165 pounds. He had short to balding brown hair, along with a graying mustache and chin stubble. His eyes were blue. He bore a 3-inch surgery scar on his lower left side, a 4-inch surgery scar on the right side of his torso, and a 14-inch surgery scar along his lower back. He was dressed in black trousers and a white T-shirt.

----
JMO: The article did not specify what items he was missing or what he had stored but they could have been his personal items, not store merchandise. It is common for people who are transient or homeless to leave their personal items (clothing, camping equipment, and bags) in secure places because they need to work or their belongings are too heavy.

As I recall, this gentleman was well known in the area as transient.
Damn, if the height wasn't 5 inches off, this guy would be a perfect match.

They do appear similar in appearance. As a point of reference, below is NC county map showing last 3 counties associated with Mr. Fields - where he was thought to be living, where he was last seen, and where his truck was located. These 3 counties border each other and also border of Virginia to the north.

That’s still worth turning in, but I think John Doe was a transient. I read that he stashed some things in a store that he couldn’t find, got mad, then went outside.
This is what I recall as well - I believe he was a "known" transient to the area.

Grove Street is a bad part of town, really Fayetteville as a whole has bad crime. Grove Street has a large homeless population. Many transients live under the bridges near Grove St and behind the gas stations there. Not unusual to see drug deals go on there at the gas stations, two right across the street from each other. Last year they put in a Shot Spotter at one of the gas stations because of the high crime in that area. There is also low-income housing in that area. (I live in Fayetteville on that side of town)
