Gary Ray Morton, 66, has breakfast every morning at Helen’s Kitchen on North Marine Boulevard and like most mornings he was there Thursday. After eating, Morton left and has not been seen since.

There were suspicious circumstances surrounding his disappearance that police were unable to comment on Friday afternoon. Due to those circumstances the sheriff’s office believes Morton may be in danger.

He owns a number of rental properties and his business, Morton Realty, and typically visits the properties after breakfast. The sheriff’s office has been checking these properties for Morton with no luck.

Morton is described as a white man, 5’8” tall, and 200 pounds with grey hair and blue eyes and drives a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban with a North Carolina license plate of BKH-6160.

Gary Morton, 66, and his dog, a silver lab named Darla, were last seen eating breakfast at Helen’s Kitchen on Dec. 8 and the same day, the sheriff’s office found evidence of a break-in and theft at Morton’s home.

Morton’s body was found near his home on Weatherington Road on Dec. 19. Darla’s body has also been found, but due to the ongoing investigation, the sheriff’s office has not released where she was found or how she died.

Thomas confirmed in March that Morton died of a gunshot wound and to date, no one has been charged in relation to Morton’s death.

Thomas has asked those with information to come forward, specifically anyone who showed behavioral changes, someone who suddenly had money they couldn’t account for or someone with a firearm of unknown origins.

Gary Morton

The case has multiple strong leads, and deputies have identified several suspects as having a motive for the murder. However, they say they still need help solving Morton’s death
