GREENSBORO, N.C. —

A gas station employee was shot and killed on Thursday morning in Greensboro. Her coworkers are remembering her as a caring manager.

Police said they responded to the Speedway, located at 2834 Battleground Avenue, just after 6 a.m. in reference to an aggravated assault.

Officers said they found one person suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries on Thursday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Patricia Grant, 72. Grant was a manager at Speedway.

According to police, the suspect was described as a Black man wearing a green winter coat with a hood, who ran away.

The investigation is ongoing.

WXII 12 News spoke with Avery Courter. Grant was his coworker and manager.

Courter said while he closes up the gas station at night, Grant was the one who would open it up in the mornings.

“She was very nice. She treated her coworkers pretty well, she would like, she was nice is pretty much the best way to describe it,” he said.

Avery said his coworker was one of a kind.

“She would treat her new coworkers really well, in particular, to like, buy them a drink for their first shift,” he said.

Police said they also served a search warrant at a home off of Marthas Place in Greensboro near the gas station but would not say how it was connected.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.

This happened in my city, absolutely crazy.

One of my dad's friends posted on Facebook about seeing someone with winter clothing pacing around a restaurant very close to where this happened. It was at night and the shooting was a few hours later.

Oh my Lord this is such a sin. Plus this lady is 72! Working at Speedway which is no picnic. I am so sorry.

Does your Speedway have a store or just that booth? Ours opens at 5:00 AM. They usually have a cop car there until the kids get in. They're stuck in there alone for hours. At least they're safe opening up.

So so sad for this kind, hard working woman. Murdered at 72. Hopefully they get him quick. That's crazy your dad may have seen him.

My dad's friend may have seen him, but my dad heard the shots I think.

This is heartbreaking. Imagine being 72 and still working, at a gas station of all things, and then getting shot dead at dawn as you open up for business. I just don't have any words to convey my sadness.
