Onslow County deputies reopen 1991 cold case, trying to ID female victim
''Bear Creek area. Investigators say she was likely killed sometime between the fall or winter of 1989 or 1990.

Detectives believe her body was in the woods a year or two before being discovered in the woods.

Decades later, several agencies helped investigators create a wax representation of the woman’s face and head. She’s described as white, 5’1 to 5’2, and between 20 and 30 years of age.''

Investigators say the case is rare because it’s Onslow County’s only cold case where they haven’t identified the victim.

“It always haunts us because it’s someone’s child, someone’s sister, and they don’t know what happened to her,” said Colonel Chris Thomas, with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of her death is unknown. Investigators say there wasn’t enough of her body left to determine how she died.

“In other words, if the individual was stabbed, there were no marks on the skeleton, you wouldn’t know how they died,” said Thomas.

The woman is in the National Database of Unidentified Victims, but there’s been no success in finding out who she is.

Past leads took them to Florida and Texas, but no arrests have ever been made.

Reconstruction of the victim by Dr. Emily Craig (note: mandible was not recovered and the jawline depicted is an estimation).

Location of Discovery: Hubert, Onslow County, North Carolina
Estimated Date of Death: 2-3 years prior
State of Remains: Partial skeletal
Cause of Death: Undetermined; suspected homicide

Estimated Age: 20-30 years old

Height: 5'1" to 5'2"
Weight: Unknown; but had slight build

Distinguishing Marks/Features: Possible back and/or neck problem (fusion of C2/3, slight arching in C1). Medical examiners found that the woman had a degenerative bone disease in her neck that she might not have even known about.

Dentals: Available. Upper jaw: right 3d molar erupted, left previously extracted with incompletely healed socket; tooth #8 has a facial - D composite (a tooth colored restoration for a chip in the tooth); little wear on teeth; minimal periodontal disease. Lower jaw not recovered.
Fingerprints: Not available.
DNA: Available.

Clothing & Personal Items
Clothing: Gray or brown crew knit sweater with gold thread; dark blue or black stretch pants; panty hose. A pair of synthetic white slip-on shoes with a small bow were found nearby. Labels of Necessary Objects Limited and 1045 Paris were observed.
Jewelry: None.
Additional Personal Items: Unknown

Circumstances of Discovery
The victim was located in a wooded area by local hunters in Bear Creek near Stewart Point Road on December 2, 1991. The hunters stumbled upon a skull while looking for raccoons.

The majority of the woman's skeleton was found 40 yards away from where hunters found the skull. Based on the clothes she was wearing, investigators believe she died in the fall or wintertime.

A cause of death could not be determined because no detectable injuries could be found on the skeleton. However, due to the isolated location of the remains, authorities concluded the case was a probable homicide.

Cannot help but think of actress Sarah Jessica Parker when i look at these particular images, wondering how close is the nose approximation? imo, speculation.

I had no idea they reopened her case! I grew up very close to where she was found, but I didn't know about her until last year. I submitted a match to the doe network last year, but have not heard yet whether it was positive or negative. I'm very glad to see that there is some movement happening in this case.

I submitted Karen Louise Wilson as a potential match, based largely off of physical descriptors.

Here is an excerpt from her profile on Doe Network:
''In 2020, it was announced authorities had reopened the victim's case. Subsequently, a new reconstruction was released. Authorities believe is the most-accurate depiction of the victim. Further tests are in progress to estimate the woman's eye and hair colors, and perhaps to conduct genetic genealogy research to identify potential family members.

Police are offering up to $2,500 for information leading to the victim's identity or otherwise valuable to the case.''

I was browsing through missing persons and came across one I thought I’d mention. The details are a bit vague and all over the place, but apparently the last time her mother spoke to her in 1988 she told her she was in North Carolina. She does resemble the earlier recons.

This case weighs so heavily on me. I don't live in my hometown anymore, but I used to live less than a mile from the area where she was found. I hope she's identified soon.

So, I have noticed on earlier posts that some of the NAMUS listed rule-outs are no longer listed on NAMUS. Specifically, I remember Rhonda Baucom being a listed rule-out but she's no longer listed? There are others as well, looking back. Does anyone know why?
