Kimmie Ann Zelrick Massengale was was last seen alive the afternoon of July 31, 1987, near the corner of West Franklin Boulevard and South Liberty Street, a zone known for prostitution. Her partially decomposed bosy was found in a wooded area behind Gaston Mall on Aug. 2, 1987. The 28-year-old prostitute was only identified after her body was sent to Chapel Hill for further assistance. Someone slashed her throat, and the Gastonia woman bled to death. Then-Gaston County Medical Examiner Don Conrad said Massengale had also been beaten in the head with a board about four inches thick, according to an Aug. 4, 1987, article in The Gaston Gazette.
Police believed she was killed where she was found, and officers at the time speculated that one of Massengale’s customers may have been responsible. The case is still unsolved.
