RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- There is nothing more powerful than a mother's love. For the past 48 hours, Tamika Armstrong has been pounding the pavement along with her family from Raleigh and Virginia looking for her son 26-year-old Madison Armstrong.

Armstrong was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and just recently became able to live independently near I-40 and Rock Quarry with family routinely checking in on him.

Independent Living is a blessing and a curse. MA likely worked his 🤬🤬* off to get to where he could live independently. It’s 3x as hard for people with disabilities, and sometimes they will have to take classes and training to be able to “prove” they can. His family obviously loves him dearly to check on him so often and make sure he’s happy in his new place. They were doing everything right! His mother must feel powerless. This is similar for all parentsI’m sure when your kids are on their own for the first time but the neurodivergence adds another layer of complexity and unpredictability . My heart hurts for his mom and I hope they find Madison soon!!

The family says they were overwhelmed with all the support and people who stepped in to try and find Madison.

In the end, it was an old neighbor who made the shocking discovery and found a body floating in a lake off New Bern Avenue. Now, the family is looking for answers - how long had he been there and was there foul play? They also feel that more could have been done.

She wants to see more resources for mental health and better communication for missing-person cases. Armstrong also said she wants to see if tracking devices can be approved for vulnerable adults with mental health conditions.

**********
Police haven't given an update on the case, other than to call the circumstances suspicious. They are still conducting an autopsy, which the family hopes will provide more clues as to what happened.

Tamika Armstrong has started a petition with about 500 signatures. She’s also called and emailed more than 170 local lawmakers in hopes to get the Silver Alert law enhanced. She believes there is a flaw in the system. Specifically, she wants text alerts for Silver Alerts and North Carolina Department of Transportation signage just like for Amber Alerts. She believes every minute counts.

The Armstrongs are still waiting for a toxicology report to see if that might have contributed to Madison's death.

People with more severe autism are often drawn to water, and if they get in, they can succumb quickly to hypothermia this time of year.

RIP, Madison.
Wonder when there will be a study done, or if there’s a list somewhere, of people who were on the spectrum or diagnosed with a disability that were found in the water after going missing or being unattended. I bet it would be shocking.
His parents are strong for taking this and using it as motivation to change the way things are. I admire them.
