Markayla Johnson, 22 and her children, Miracle Johnson, 4 and Messiah Johnson, 7-months. Missing since March 3, 2024.

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A search is underway for a missing Charlotte mother and her two young children, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

A vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro, is listed in the police report as related property.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately.

WCCB’s Emma Mondo spoke with next door neighbors of Johnson’s. They say off camera that they saw Johnson and her two babies here every day. They say they never heard fighting or arguing coming from the apartment.

Another neighbor says that a motorcycle and Camaro outside the condo both belong to Johnson’s boyfriend. That neighbor says they have not been touched since the three disappeared. They also tells WCCB that Johnson’s boyfriend has not been seen since last Sunday, either.

Detective Rose with CMPD’s missing persons unit told WCCB’s he was currently in the heat of the investigation, so he couldn’t share any information at this time.

CHAROTTE — Police were in the middle of investigating the Orchard Trace apartments off North Tryon Street when officers discovered human remains.

The complex in northeast Charlotte is where a mother and her two children were reported missing last week, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police are investigating a possible connection.

On Friday, police said they found the remains about 1:45 p.m. while conducting an investigation on the same block. Orchard Trace Lane is off Reagan Drive near Interstate 85 in northeast Charlotte.

Police are investigating a possible connection between the remains and Johnson and her children, CMPD Major Torri Tillis told reporters at the scene Friday..

“Everything is a possibility at this point,” he said.

Police didn’t disclose the type of investigation they were conducting when they found the remains.

Friday’s CMPD news release used the word “victim” when referring to the remains, although Charlotte Observer news partner WSOC reported that police don’t know if the remains are of one person or multiple people.

‘Heinous act’: Missing Charlotte mother, 2 children confirmed dead after remains found

Police Chief speaks at brief News conference. Police are looking for Markayla's boyfriend (not father of either child) who may be in NC or SC. No name or description for him was shared.
What a horrible, horrible ending. Praying for the strength of this family.
It's reported that she was found in the home. I wonder what took so long to announce they found them? It's income tax time, I wonder if $ could be a motive.

“People would take advantage of her because she was so kindhearted,” said Markeysha Johnson, Makayla Johnson’s mother.

The family is pleading with the public to help police find the boyfriend.

“I just want to say, I miss my baby,” said Markeysha Johnson. “I miss my grandkids. She was a good person and everybody knows Kayla would do anything for you. She didn’t deserve this. She did not deserve this. She was such a loving person. Everybody knew that.” :(

This POI (boyfriend) killed Markayla and her two kids? Why, why, why, does this continue to happen?

No mention of a bf that I could find? Just love for her children :(

I don't really understand this. She was found along with her kids at the place she was last seen? Is this right?
Johnson, her four year old daughter, Miracle and her seven month old son, Messiah were last seen over a week ago on March 3rd.

They were last seen at the Orchard Trace Condominiums just south of University City.

Neighbors are praying for the best as they look for more answers.

All the public records I find suggest that Markayla lived in South Carolina, had she recently moved to NC with the boyfriend? Trying to make sense of why LE took so long to find the bodies?

I just can't understand why LE waited for 12 days after they were reported missing to get a warrant to search their last known location.
Wouldn't their safety be the utmost consideration? What if they had been injured but not dead? What if only the mother had been killed, and the children were trapped with no way out and no way to get help? Wouldn't that have been a consideration in the early days? The details haven't been released yet, and there is no reason to think that is the case, but they wouldn't have known that without entering the apartment.

Police charged Benjamin Joseph Taylor, 35, with three counts of murder and one count of concealment of death.

Taylor was found on Saturday and arrested in Imperial County, California. He will be held in the Imperial County jail, awaiting extradition to North Carolina.

Prior to Taylor's arrest, police said at a news conference on Saturday that the person they were looking for was in a relationship with Johnson.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - For Jacqueline Lewis, searching for answers in the Charlotte Community is her passion.

Lewis is the founder of Angels of No Mercy, an organization focused on stopping violence in the community.

“It took that long to decide whether or not to get a search warrant? And they’re saying the problem was that it wasn’t her house. It doesn’t matter. We were looking for children and a mom,” shared Lewis.

*****
A spokesperson with CMPD explained to WBTV that the department will not talk about a timeline or anything specific to this case because they don’t want to jeopardize anything in court.

Lewis asserts the outcome of the investigation would have ended differently if it happened elsewhere.

The warrant says all the victims’ bodies appeared to be wrapped in cords.

All of the information led to Benjamin Taylor’s arrest. He was found in California and extradited to Mecklenburg County nearly a month after they went missing.

On Monday morning, he appeared in front of a judge in Mecklenburg County for the first time.

Taylor had shackles around his ankles as he waited an hour to hear if he would be granted bond. The judge decided Taylor would not have any bond and would await trial in jail.

The next court date for Taylor is set for April 26th, but there is a possibility he could be indicted before that happens.

Family and detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on March 5 knocked on Johnson’s door but no one answered. A maintenance employee told detectives he opened the door with a master key but the door was stopped by the security chain. No one responded when he called, he said. On March 6, detectives obtained surveillance video that showed Taylor leaving the state on a bus, an affidavit said. Cops issued a missing persons alert to the public on March 8.

Officers obtained a search warrant for Johnson’s apartment on March 16. When they went inside they found Johnson’s body located in a plastic container with cords around her.

“Detectives also located multiple used air fresheners and candles,” the affidavit states. “Multiple fans were turned on and the AC unit was turned down to approximately 62 degrees.”

The next day, on March 16, cops then searched Taylor’s car. In the trunk, they located Miracle and Messiah in plastic bags within travel bags, the affidavit said. Miracle’s wrists were bound and had diapers around her face and head, according to investigators.
