Raleigh mass shooting suspect's defense will blame medication use, 'diminished capacity'

The Raleigh teen accused of killing five people and injuring two others in a mass shooting spree in October 2022 will claim that a reaction to prescription medicine contributed to his actions, according to a court filing in his case.

The defense team for Austin Thompson filed notice Wednesday that they would use "diminished capacity" and "voluntary intoxication ... of a prescribed medication" when he comes to trial next year.

IMO, “VOLUNTARY intoxication” of a prescription medication seems a whole lot like what might, in other cases involving different types of defendants, simply be termed “drug abuse.” People who “voluntarily” use their prescription meds in a manner intended to render them “intoxicated” are—literally—drug abusers, are they not? The fact that the defense is (IMO again) already using evasive language suggests they’re grasping at straws in an effort to get their young client off with the lightest possible sentence.

They may be referring to anti-depressants that have a disclaimer about "suicidal and homicidal thoughts". I doubt he would abuse them, they do not get you high.

Yes, this is also what I presume they are referring to. Although, I think this argument rarely works in any case. Because SSRIs don’t alter one’s ability to discern right from wrong.

I can’t find any MSM references to the meds in question in this case being anything with a black box warning about potentially causing “suicidal/homicidal” thoughts/actions (and FWIW I don’t think I have ever heard of any medication stating it poses any risk of users developing homicidal thoughts/actions). I was wondering if instead it might be a stimulant medication of the type regularly prescribed to young adults to treat ADHD/attention-deficit disorders, because (in my experience working with young adults/teens) those drugs can be used recreationally as they can create pleasurable/euphoric feelings.

Oh stimulants like Adderall are abused greatly! They are super addictive. And super brain damaging.

I totally agree with you, but I’ve seen some people suggest that mass shootings are more often a byproduct of suicidal ideation rather than a true desire to kill people. At least, that’s what Sue Klebold wants you to believe.
