Students investigated after allegedly discussing a Columbine-style attack

"Scotland County Sheriff’s Lt. Inv. Jessica Sadonikov said last week an employee at Carver Middle School alerted the school resource officer about some suspicious postings on Instagram."

"...officials determined that roughly three or four students, between the ages of 12 and 13, were discussing a Columbine-style attack in a manner that made investigators think they were serious... specific teachers and several students were targeted."

"The SCSO is seeking secured custody of the juveniles. Investigators would not comment when asked if the students had guns."

Six NC students formally charged for allegedly discussing a Columbine-style attack

SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – Six Scotland County middle school students are now formally charged for allegedly discussing a Columbine-style attack, according to investigators.

The Scotland County Sheriff’s Office has affidavits processing at the juvenile detention center. A judge will then review them and decide whether or not to put the juveniles in a secure detention center or let them stay at home with their parents as the case goes on, according to Sadovnikov.

“It is in my opinion this is a very serious matter that a reasonable person would believe was intended to be carried out,” she said. “I was able to interview some professional staff and law enforcement officers who stated that several of the group actually did have the means to carry (out) such an act, in their opinion.”

Scotland County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Unit

"On Thursday, January 24, 2019, the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division, responded to Carver Middle School for a report of a possible attempt at an act of mass violence.

The report was received from Deputy Sergeant SRO Sheronika Smith. Sgt. Investigators responded to the middle school and began their investigation. During their interviews and evidence collection, it was determined that the involved students began their communications on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, sometime during late afternoon/early evening hours.

The report was received after two students attending the middle school reported to Carver Middle School Staff, of what they believed to be a plan to carry out an active shooter situation which was intended to occur, Friday, January 25, 2019.

Upon reviewing the tangible evidence of communications in conjunction with interview statements of students, it is apparent that the involved students communicated their intentions over the course of several days. These communications included in depth, statements made pertaining to specific targeted teachers who were referred to by name, and statements pertaining to intentions to assault and injure as many students as possible.

The communications included statements pertaining to which involved parties would provide weapons, and involved students who were attempting to recruit additional students to partake in the act.

As of Tuesday, January 29, 2019, the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigative Division, secured six total juvenile petitions against the involved students and has requested of juvenile services for these students to be ordered to secured custody and confined within a declared juvenile detention facility. The CID has alleged that these students violated a NC statue of, Communicating Threats of Mass Violence upon a School Campus. This crime is a class H felony under North Carolina law.

The Sheriff’s Office also received information from Sgt. Smith that on Friday, January 25, 2019, that a third party student was sent to the school allegedly seeking to physically assault the two students who originally made the report."
