75-year-old William Holt, who was last seen on Friday while walking his dog.

He has dementia and was visiting family in Roxboro, but is from Swansboro. They also say authorities think based on his military background that he might be surviving in the cold based on some of the survival skills he learned in the past.

Helicopter, search crews looking for missing Person County man

William Daniel “Danny” Holt was last seen walking a brown and white dog around 11:30 a.m. in the area of 412 Shiloh Church Road, according to a news release from Person County officials.

About an hour later, family members contacted deputies to report Holt, who has Alzheimer’s, had not returned home and could not be found.

With the help of numerous federal, state and local agencies as well as civilian volunteers, we have searched the area he was last seen near the residence in Person County by foot, boat, ATV, UTV, drones, helicopter, sonar and utilization of numerous K9’s without any luck so far. Family is keeping a check on his home in Swansboro, NC. We have also checked all other locations in Person County where he may have resided or had ties to in the past.

Authorities expand search for missing Person County man with Alzheimer’s

“We have not found the dog, we have not found the leash, no articles of clothing, nothing,” said Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones.

The family told CBS 17 Holt had $60 dollars, a flashlight, a watch, a knife, and a cell phone when he disappeared. The family has tried calling Holt’s cell phone but it just goes to voicemail.

“We have had more than 60 search teams on the ground searching for him since Friday,” Jones said.

Search for missing man enters second week

“Being that we have no clues and the dog has not returned, it is puzzling at one point but also hopeful in another,” he said. “Generally on something like this, if a person goes down the dog returns home or the animal is found. We have hopes that he and the dog have been taken to another location. If he’s in the woods, the chances [of survival] are very slim being that we’re this far out, being realistic. But if he got a ride, he could be fine. At this point we have no clues to keep looking in this area or to get us looking somewhere else.”

Jones said Alzheimer’s patients’ memories usually revert back to a certain period in their life and the authorities’ hope is that Holt’s memory has taken him to a time where his survival skills from his time in the U.S. Navy would be useful.

I've been thinking about the dog a lot. It was stated Mr. Holt is not from Roxboro, but was visiting with family. It's also been stated the dog belonged to him. So, if the dog is not still with Mr. Holt, would it be able to find its way back to where they were visiting ? The article above states there have been several dog sightings, but none have been his dog. I'm thinking at this point, finding the dog may provide at least a clue. JMOO

Person County Sheriff's Department said numerous agencies, K9's, and volunteers searched the area around his home by foot, boat, ATV, UTV, drone, helicopter and sonar without any luck. In a Facebook post Thursday, the department said the team would be shifting focus in the investigating and continuing to follow leads.

Swansboro man remains missing after disappearance in Person County

An active search led by the Person County Sheriff’s Office continued for 10 days but no leads proved successful and as of Tuesday Holt remained missing.

Morris said they don’t know if Holt tried to leave the area or if he tried to get back to Swansboro.

“We just don’t know (where he is),” said Person County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kevin Morris.

Morris said the search covered more than 1,000 miles by land, air and water using specialized search teams as well as hundreds of volunteers.

In a Wednesday afternoon Facebook post, the Person County Sheriff’s Office announced that the body found Tuesday by deputies was that of William Daniel Holt and no foul play was involved.

Help sought in 2013 Vernon cold case

It has been one year since the Vernon Parish Cold Case Team reopened a 2013 suspicious death case, and investigators continue to search for new answers in the death of 38-year-old Danny Holt.

Holt died on Nov. 23, 2013, by what was initially considered to be a suicide, but forensic evidence has since placed significant doubt in the minds of investigators.
