Circumstances - The MP dropped off his wife at the hospital in Watford City for a scheduled appointment, cashed a $100 check and filled his car's gas tank, but apparently became disoriented whilst driving home. Instead of heading east in the direction of Keene Township (where he owned and operated a family ranch), he headed west in the direction of Alexander and Dore, where probable sightings of him were confirmed by authorities. A local couple stated that they saw a man driving through a field matching his description who asked for directions to Watford City, but they were unable to help him with his inquiry.
The MP's car (a 1980 Plymouth Honzon) was later found abandoned in the Lake Trenton area, southwest of Williston. It was mired in mud, and was located on a seldom-used path instead of a main arterial road. The ignition key had been snapped off in the switch, and his gloves were located lying on the dashboard. The location is surrounded by irrigation channels and bogs, and isn't far from the Montana state line, where a possible sighting of him after the disappearance in the Fairview area remains unconfirmed. A later reported sighting indicated that a local resident saw him walking across the top of the ice-covered Lake Trenton, which had frozen over around the time of his disappearance. Some have hypothesised that he may have become lost in the dark, and attempted to walk towards the lights of Trenton Township on the night he went missing.
Locals and authorities conducted land and water searches for the missing person, including the deployment of divers, but no trace of him has been located to date.
