The search began Sunday evening, but weather conditions — which dropped a dusting of flurries over the prairies — and daylight led law enforcement to abandon the search for the day. They continued Monday and on Tuesday, they gained assistance in the form of a bloodhound from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, as well as civilians who showed up in full force, wanting to help.
While there were initial misgivings about including civilians in the search, Det. Daniel Ward, public information officer for the Williams County Sheriff's Office, said that they were accepted into the mix and given assignments. These assignments — assigning them a grid to search and a map — were distributed and the search party went in separate directions either in vehicles or side-by-sides.

A $10,000 reward has been offered — by "a private citizen concerned for him," Fry said — relating to credible information about Shelton's whereabouts and safe return.

Roger Shelton, 61, was last seen on Jan. 5 near his home in the residential area of the township located west of Williston. Shelton was first reported missing to law enforcement by his son on Sunday evening.
Williams County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Ward said Shelton’s vehicles and personal effects such as his cell phone, wallet and medication remained at his home.
The search was delayed due to flurries and the setting sun but the Williston Police asked residents of the township to search their out-buildings, barns and other structures for Shelton as a more comprehensive search was mounted.

Shelton, who was last seen on the evening of Jan. 5, was shown in footage at the Black Gold Casino, located on the Montana side of the state line, about 10 miles west of his home in Judson Township.
Det. Daniel Ward with the Williams County Sheriff's Office stated that this was the last public place Shelton was known to be at before presumably returning to his home.
"We know he went back home after the casino, at least that is what we were led to believe, due to text messages he sent out and the fact his vehicles and phone were at his home," Ward said.
