On Tuesday, April 24th, 1979, officers responded to 4264 Binney Street around 8 a.m. after being contacted by concerned family and friends of Ms. Matthews and her son, Kamal. They reported they had not heard from or seen them which was unusual. Ms. Matthews and her son were found dead inside their home. She worked in tutoring and recreation programs. Ms. Matthews taught music lessons and worked for a time at Omaha Girl's Club

Her son Kamal Matthews was a second-grader at Clifton Hill School. Kamal liked to ride his bike and read comics. Together they had a Omaha World-Herald paper-route. ''

''Upon arriving at Deroshia’s residence, they borrowed a spare key from her neighbor and entered the house. The chilling scene that awaited them defied comprehension. On the bedroom floor lay Kamal, still wearing his pajamas, lifeless, a rope cruelly wound around his neck. It was a gruesome sight that no family should ever have to witness. Panic-stricken and horrified, they immediately contacted the police.
As the police descended upon the Matthews home, they discovered a second victim: 26-year-old Deroshia. She was found in the basement, partially clothed, suffocated, and strangled with a rope around her neck, mirroring the grim fate of her son. The house bore signs of intrusion and chaos — drawers…''

Abdulmalik Husain, 67, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder.

Wednesday’s update from police said recent DNA testing had led to Husain’s recent arrest by the OPD Cold Case Squad. But he had been previously arrested — as Louis Walker — on charges relating to the Matthews’ death in January 2004 in Aurora, Colo.
