Just bumping case up. I couldn't find any articles online about her being missing, unfortunately. It seems like there are numerous possibilities regarding what happened, IMO.

Girard attended a court hearing in Gering, Nebraska on June 13, 1997. She was living with her boyfriend in Scottsbluff, Nebraska at the time. She was supposed to appear with her attorney for a proceeding on July 11, but never showed up. She has never been heard from again.

She was not reported missing until June 30, 1998, a year after her disappearance. Many agencies report her date of disappearance as May 5, the day she bonded of the county jail in Scottsbluff.

Prior her disappearance, Girard had been convicted of misdemeanor attempted forgery for stealing and cashing a check from a Gering man for $500. On May 1, a month and a half before she went missing, she attended her sentencing hearing and found out she was ineligible for probation and would have to serve a custodial sentence. Her family attended the hearing as well and stated she expected the sentence and was not upset about it.

Her public offender filed notice of intent to appeal, arguing that the sentence was excessive, and Girard was out on bond pending the outcome of this appeal when she disappeared. The appeal was subsequently denied, but by then she was missing.

She was in an abusive relationship at the time of her disappearance; her family saw her with black eyes and bruises and referred to her then-boyfriend as a monster. They helped Girard report the domestic violence to the police, but she would always withdraw the charges later.

The boyfriend, who was not very cooperative in the investigation, told the police Girard had simply taken her belongings and left one day. This is something her family doubts, as she only had about $20 on her when she disappeared, and she didn't have a car or access to one. The boyfriend died in 2000; he was never charged in Girard's disappearance or publicly named as a suspect.

In spite of the legal proceedings against her and in spite of her subtance abuse problem, both police and Girard's family believe foul play was involved in her disappearance. She always maintained contact with her family, called her twin brother on their birthday, and attended family holidays and other events.

The boyfriend angle is interesting. I can't find much about her or him, and I wonder what happened where he died in 2000. This story mentions him and seems to know who he is but there's no details. Since she would have only been 38 in 2000 you'd have to assume he was pretty young too. It's a sad story when parents can't find their children, no matter the age of the child.

These partial remains were found about 10 miles away from Scottsbluff in 2021: The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

Monday, October 18, 2021, a local rancher found what appeared to be human bones at a site just north of the North Platte River, North-West of Melbeta. The bones were photographed and recovered. The area was searched and no other bones were recovered. The next day the bones were examined by the Regional West Medical Center Pathology staff and photos were sent to a Forensic Anthropologist in Ft. Collins, CO. The bones were positively identified as human, two bones from the left forearm, noted as the "ulna" and "radial" bones. On October 25, 2021 K-9 cadaver teams from Colorado arrived and spent several hours searching the area. Dogs did not indicate on any areas of interest.

On another note, I wonder if Meaghan knows she has two profiles on CP for her.

Achievements are listed in the statistics columns of track stories, mostly in the Alliance Times-Herald. The young woman garnered recognition as an attendant in the St. Agnes’ School royalty court in April 1980. Her name is listed among her siblings as her parents, Bernard and Betty, celebrated their 40th anniversary in July 1991. She served in different roles in weddings of family members.

Recently, Scottsbluff Police Sgt. Krisa Brass attended a homicide training with a fellow Scottsbluff Police detective.

In that training, the two police officers discussed tools available to law enforcement today, she told the Star-Herald.

“While we were there, we made a list of technology changes or database changes that we thought could be applied to some of our unsolved cases,” Brass said. “And then we brought the list back out, trying to figure out ways we could plug in that information.”

Girard is believed to have disappeared sometime in June 1997. Brass said that timeline is based on court filings and interviews with Girard’s family.

A number of events led to the family losing contact with Girard, who had experienced some legal problems, and they were not immediately aware she was missing. She had been sentenced to one year in the women’s penitentiary in York on a misdemeanor charge of attempted forgery after being convicted of stealing a check from a Gering man and cashing it for $500.

Kerry Girard’s brother, Dennis, and Betty Girard, Dennis and Kerry’s mother, last saw her at that May 1, 1997, sentencing hearing, where the judge determined she was ineligible for probation.

“She was ready to serve her sentence,” he said. “She expected it.”

Such a sad case. I think she could/would have lived a decent life of integrity once she served her sentence if only she had not been "trapped" in that relationship. IMO.

Authorities issued a statement Friday to dispel any rumors after Girard’s missing person entry was temporarily purged from the NCIC database. Police said NCIC validations are regularly conducted to ensure the accuracy and completeness of long-standing entries, and Girard’s information was inadvertently removed during this process. Her case has since been re-entered into the national system
