A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot Wednesday evening in New York’s Upper East Side as she pushed her baby in a stroller, police said.

Police said a man wearing a black sweatshirt and sweatpants approached the woman near the corner of East 95th Street and Lexington Avenue, and shot her at close range before fleeing.

At 8:23 p.m. local time, law enforcement responded to a report that someone had been shot opposite 164 E. 95th St., near a primary school and a playground, Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said during a news briefing late Wednesday.

Authorities believe the victim and the shooter knew each other, calling it a domestic incident, and they've identified a person of interest they want to speak with, a senior law enforcement official said. The 3-month-old was not harmed, police said.

The woman is believed to be the child's mother, several law enforcement officials told CNN. Authorities determined she was temporarily living in a building several blocks away, which is a women's shelter, one of the officials said.

Officials "strongly believe it was not a random shooting" and "the victim was targeted," the mayor added Thursday morning.

Investigators learned the child's age and details about the woman from domestic incident reports on which her name appears, the official said. The reports include her name, those listed as former boyfriends and the name of a second child who was not with her at the time of the shooting,
one official said. Her name has not been released publicly.

On Wednesday night, Stephanie McGraw, the founder of We All Really Matter, a Harlem-based organization known as W.A.R.M. that aids domestic violence victims, was just inside the police tape cordoning off the site of the shooting.

Ms. McGraw said she was there because she “got a call,” but declined to elaborate. Although the authorities said only that the circumstances surrounding the shooting were under investigation, she speculated that domestic abuse might be involved. Two law enforcement officials confirmed that the police were looking at the killing as a potential incident of domestic violence.

“You don’t just randomly shoot a woman with a small child point blank in the head,” Ms. McGraw said. “That’s rage.”

so tired of men thinking women and/or children who are inconvenient for them or who, heaven forbid, tell them no, or who leave their abusive behinds, are disposable.

And this kind of crime will get so much worse. We will be seeing it on the daily. SMDH I'm gonna go out on a very short limb and say this was an intimate partner scorned or baby daddy who didn't want to pay child support.

another child of undetermined age and the 3 month old are now left motherless and the 20 year old will never see those babies grow up. so very sad all the way round.

Some men cannot handle the word NO and rejection. They feel they own her and if they cannot have her no one can. We've got rage, self-entitlement, lack of anger mgt, and easy access to gun problems in America.
expect this to get much much worse this summer.

Baby’s Father Arrested in Shooting of Woman Who Was Walking Stroller

July 1, 2022 - 10:01PM

Azsia Johnson, 20, was shot to death on a quiet section of 95th Street on Wednesday evening. The father of their child was arrested on Friday evening and charged with murder.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death of Azsia Johnson, a 20-year-old mother who was fatally shot at point blank range on Wednesday as she pushed her 3-month-old daughter in a stroller while on a walk on the Upper East Side, the police announced.

The man, Isaac Argro, was apprehended late Friday afternoon in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, the official said. Mr. Argro was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the police. According to Ms. Johnson’s family, Mr. Argro was the father of the 3-month-old baby who was in the stroller the night Ms. Johnson was killed.

“This was premeditated murder,” said Lisa Desort, Ms. Johnson’s mother, in an interview before Mr. Argro was taken into custody. “He intended to kill my daughter no matter what.”
