Year of Death or Disappearance: 1989

City/Town: Peteborough

Status: Unsolved Homicide

Craig Lane, age 17, was working at the Texaco Station on Route 202 in Peterborough when he was killed during an apparent robbery. The robbery took place at approximately 5:30 p.m. on January 8, 1989. The assailant stabbed the victim and stole money from the gas station. Customers saw a person fleeing the scene at the time. The person was identified as a white male in his later teens to early twenties, approximately 5'10" tall, slim to medium build, with brown medium-length hair, wearing a red jacket with a blue stripe around the chest area, blue jeans, and a dark baseball cap. A composite sketch of the suspect is below.

I was watching Web of Death and thinking of this case. I grew up in Peterborough and remember hearing Craig's name and seeing the suspect drawing all over town for years. His grandparents were such sweet people and were also our neighbors while I was growing up. I always hoped his murder would be solved before they passed but I just saw that both Helen and Kempie are gone now. Has there been any information found in this case? I feel like it's been cold since the day he was murdered.

Borea, I just Googled the town and learned that the current population is only around 6400 - I presume it hasn't grown too much since then? Because my original thought was that robbing a store and killing the clerk at 5:30 PM is pretty risky - that's a time when lots of people are still milling about. I would also assume that the Texaco was either the only gas station around, or not much else, so anyone who needed something along those lines would kind of have to go there. And, on top of all that, the small population would mean most people would probably know or at least recognize one another. If the robber/killer was willing to take that sort of risk, were they not from the area/just passing through? etc.

The Google map also shows me the area is literally SURROUNDED by wildlife preserves, national parks, etc. In other words, very easy for someone to hide quickly.

Can we think of any noted killers who might have been proven to have been in that area, even very temporarily, in January 1989?
