Police in New Hampshire say they have found what appears to be human remains on the Rockingham Rail Trail in Manchester. Officers responded to an area near the rail trail off of Candia Road on Saturday.

“The remains were about a thousand feet in from the Proctor Rd gate,” said Manchester Police.

Police have cleared the scene and the rail trail is reopened. They have determined that the death is not recent and it does not appear suspicious.

How could they know the death does not appear suspicious? Are there signs it was an accident?
I wonder the same. Even if the bones were at the bottom of a cliff someone could have pushed them.
You would think they would at least need identification to make that assumption.
Maybe the deceased was in a violent relationship and filed a protection order, there’s hundreds of possibilities that could lead to alleging a crime.

If there are signs that the deceased person was living in this area while homeless, that might also be reason to assume that they died of natural causes. But if the remains are "old" you would think that such evidence would have disappeared.

LE doesn't generally assume foul play and look for evidence there wasn't. They tend to assume everything was normal unless there's evidence of foul play. Kind of the opposite of the way we tend to look at it.

This is just up the road from where we used to live.

Of course, that makes the most sense. It "does not appear suspicious" because there is no evidence of foul play. I would have thought they would decline to comment until they have evidence one way or the other, but I'm sure you're right.

The way they're talking about it, they make it sound like they think they know who it is. Maybe there was ID or something. Hopefully we'll hear soon.

"While their investigation into the discovery of human remains on the Rockingham Rail Trail off Candia Road continues, Manchester police said Sunday they don’t believe there is a connection to the death of a woman found elsewhere along the same trail in December... According to police, someone walking in the area around 5 p.m. Friday spotted the remains and called police. Detectives on Saturday determined that the death was not recent and does not appear suspicious, police said in a news release.

The medical examiner was called to the scene, but the cause of death had yet to be announced as of Sunday night."

Police: Bodies found near Manchester rail trail not likely linked

The woman referenced here is Cynthia Halloran, who was found deceased on the morning of December 30th, 2020. Her cause and manner of death remain undetermined. Her body was found behind the Youngsville baseball complex "near the parking lot for the Rockingham Rail Trail" according to the article. Police believe that the two are unrelated.

Human remains found on NH trail identified as woman who was reported missing in 2015

MANCHESTER, N.H. (WHDH) - Human remains that were found on a trail in New Hampshire late last month have been positively identified as a woman who was reported missing in 2015, police announced Tuesday.

Remains found on the Rockingham Trail off of Candia Road in Manchester on April 23 are those of 51-year-old Nancy Burgess, according to the Manchester Police Chief Allen Aldenberg.

RIP Nancy.

Here is her NamUs page while it's still up: The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

She was known to be suicidal, so it sounds like LE was correct about the death appearing non-suspicious, re the discussion above. I'm guessing there was some evidence of suicide at the scene that led them to make that statement.

Thinking of her family members.
