Circumstances of Disappearance

Alice Musser was last seen on November 10, 1983, by a neighbor who noticed Alice walking south along Saddle River Road at about 2 p.m. When she didn't show up for work on November 14, her husband was called, and he reported her missing.

Alice left behind all her belongings and an uncashed paycheck.

In the year prior to her disappearance, the Saddle Brook police department had been called on at least 10 occasions for marital disputes. Alice had begun setting cash aside in a metal security box at a neighbor's house. She was secretly borrowing her brother's car and parked it blocks away from the house so her husband wouldn't find out.

In January 1983, divorce papers were filed but the couple continued living together. The next month, per Alice's request, the court ordered the husband to store his rifles and his .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver with the Police Department. Their divorce was to be finalized November 29. Alice stood to receive about $100,000 in the divorce settlement. She disappeared 2 1/2 weeks later. The only item missing from the home was her purse, which held divorce and insurance papers.

Alice's husband went to court to have her declared legally dead in 1990, despite stating he believed she was still alive and hiding just to torment him. Alice's attorney resumed divorce proceedings in the hope of completing the case before her husband had her declared dead so her property would pass to her children instead of the husband. In 1991, a judge declared Alice dead and her husband became administrator of her estate, which included a home, two vacant lots, and assorted securities and bank accounts.
