"In a nice, quiet, blue-collar town, this shocked everyone," Melendez said. "I felt a strong need to mention her in one of my books because I can't believe there is no traction on this case, I can't believe it."
Just before midnight on July 9, 2012, Duncan-Wilson and a friend were walking on Hussa Street from the Dunkin’ Donuts on Wood Avenue in Linden.
As the two friends walked, words were exchanged with someone they encountered, officials have said. Duncan-Wilson was robbed before being shot in the head. She died at the scene. Police believe she might have recognized the shooter.
Her friend, who police have never identified, is a potential witness. Police said there might have been more than one person involved in the robbery.''
''Melendez said she is surprised Duncan-Wilson's friend has provided limited helpful information.
“I found it befuddling to the core," Melendez said, adding she's more disturbed by why there hasn't been more media coverage of the Duncan-Wilson case.
Duncan-Wilson's friend's cellphone was found in Rahway near the river, across from 401 River Road, about five hours after the killing. Police have said it appeared as if someone tried to throw the cellphone into the river but missed.
Duncan-Wilson's family and people in the community believe there are people who know who the shooter is, as well as the person with the shooter.''
''Duncan-Wilson was a Linden High School cheerleader, good student and was involved in the school's dance program. A mural of a butterfly is painted inside the school's dance studio in her memory. She had received a partial scholarship to study criminal justice in college and had plans to become a police officer.''
