When Wall police were called to investigate the death of a 6-week-old girl on March 9, 2019, they did not initially discover what happened to her. But they did find home surveillance video that captured the infant's father brutalizing his 15-month-old son just days earlier, according to documents obtained by the Asbury Park Press.
Video from two surveillance cameras in the bedroom Austin Meli shared with the mother of his children depicted Meli on March 7 striking the older child in the head and knocking him down in his playpen, picking up the toddler by the neck and violently shaking him, slamming the child onto a bed and pressing on his neck, and then throwing him back into his playpen, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Wall Detective Christopher Lisewski.

Video from March 8 showed Meli picking up the boy by his ankles and violently swinging him around as the child screamed, the affidavit said. Meli then placed his hands over the toddler's mouth and nose, preventing him from breathing until he stopped screaming, the document said.
Meli was advised of the murder charge this morning at his first appearance in the case before Superior Court Judge Paul X. Escandon. He is scheduled to have a detention hearing later today.
