Hardware Man Vanishes

Special to The New York Times JULY 11, 1964

ELIZABETH, N. J., July 10—A 16‐state alarm was issued by the police here today for George Wright Bugher, presi*dent of the Hand Hardware Company, who has been missing since yesterday. His clothing and other possessions were found scattered in his office at 157 Jefferson Avenue. Two of*fice safes were open and $639 was missing, according to the police. Mr. Bugher, 38 years old, lived at 225 Washington Road. Princeton.

The police said that the miss‐ing man's jacket, personal papers and a briefcase and ap*pointment books were found in his office. Part of his wallet and a driver's license, with $17 in cash, were found under a safe.

The police said that Robert Ferris, 35, manager of the hardware concern, found the two safes open when he opened the store yesterday and notified them that something was amiss.
Mr. Bugher was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, with dark hair. He wears eye glasses and was last seen dressed in a rain*coat, white shirt and tie and gray trousers. His 1954 Chev*rolet also is missing, the police said.

I have been researching this case for a few years now. A while back I came across this clipping from a November 12, 1967 Long Beach newspaper. I dismissed it as probably another George W. Bugher, but it might be worth looking into as there was only one other middle-aged George W. Bugher that I could find living in the U.S. at that time (a George Wayne Bugher from Indiana who later lived in New Mexico). I’ve looked for any other evidence of the missing GWB in California and have come up with nothing. The address listed—143 S Raitt Ave.—is not a valid address and never has been as far as I can tell. Maybe it is a misprint of 1430 S Raitt St. or something similar, but there is no Bugher listed at that address in the Santa Ana directories or voter registration records.

Anyway, if his family is curious they could maybe do a FOIA request to the Social Security Administration for his employment records to rule out that he was employed after 1964.

<<George had called his wife the evening of his disappearance and told her he would be late coming home. He said he had an appointment with two men to talk about refinancing the company. He has not been seen since.

The following day, the firm manager opened the building and found George's keys in the inside lock and the burglar alarm turned off. The two safes were open and a cash box with over $600.00 was missing. George's wallet, jacket, pipe, and briefcase were found in the building.

Two days later, George's 1954 Chevy was found parked at the intersection of Chapel Street and Fleming Avenue in Newark. The missing cash box was found in the car containing four pennies and a few receipts.>>
