May 5, 1985

NATIONWIDE search by New Jersey police continues for a 27 year-old woman from Kearny who disappeared 14 months ago after leaving her home to buy a pack of cigarettes. The woman, Helen Wagner, was reported missing by her husband on Feb. 24, 1984, after she left the couple's Belgrove Drive home with only $9 in cash. The husband told investigators that his wife had suicidal tendencies and that he feared for her safety. Detective Norman Rutan of the Kearny police said he has contacted other departments across the nation and hospitals in the tristate area in an attempt to get leads on her whereabouts. Wagner, also known as Helen LaHache, is 5-feet-6 and 110 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. She has a broken nose, crooked teeth, and scars on her wrists and chin. She also bears a blue-colored crescent moon tattoo on her thigh

The woman, an Iroquois Indian, "walked out with only $9 in her pockets, no ID and only the clothing she was wearing," said Detective Norman. Investigators have checked Indian reservations in Canada and upstate New York, and have questioned relatives New York City for clues to her whereabouts

I’m just hearing of this case. How sad! She had a lot of injuries over time for such a young person. Sad! I wonder what ever happened to her husband.
